I’ve completed some initial Benchmarks of the Psystar Open Computer. The results below are from Xbench 1.3 running on the following systems:

Psystar Open Computer, 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 10.5.2
Mac mini, 2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 10.5.2

Open Computer 2.4 Mac mini 2.0
Results 146.87 99.35
CPU Test 133.49 125.63
Thread Test 192.73 187.97
Memory Test 137.86 129.88
Quartz Graphics Test 201.00 180.70
OpenGL Graphics Test 173.80 295.74
User Interface Test 286.67 266.94
Disk Test 74.01 27.16

Higher scores are better.

In short, the Psystar pretty much trounces the closest price Mac available from Apple – the Mac mini – in both overall results and the CPU test.As a point of reference, I also benchmarked Apple’s current notebooks, after the jump…

You broke the link. Here's the working one: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=1736&tag=btxcsim

Results are nothing surprising. Apple's selling point is the software rather than performance hardware.

Glad to see another computer using OS X, though. I would love to be able to install the OS and get good support on my own PC, which I would be able to build around performance.

Does the Psystar use a 7200 or 5400RPM HDD?

According to them 7200RPM

And your right it would be nice to have support for a machine you can build yourself for performance.

If this company can stay around long enough without getting demolished by Apple then the only thing left about Apple for me to despise is their iPod crapopoly. Oh, and the fact that all their products look girly. A reasonably-priced Mac will help drive down Windows costs, too!

Edit: I just realized that the CPU used by the Psystar computer is better... These benches now look effectively doctored.

The Mac's greatest downfall is their tyranical "only use on macs" OS. TBH, its wayyyy faster than Windows, and if they would just let normal PC users use it, Windows would go bye-bye. Think about it, more OSX users = more dev = better support = more companies would program for Macs and not just windows = GG. Ohh well, Steve Jobs is both brilliant and an absolute idiot.

What's interesting is that they've been selling these for over a month now, and some big websites did reviews on them, and Apple still hasn't shut them down.

They tried and apparently there was a law passed in the late 80's during the whole OS/2 era that said that companies cannot lock OS's to hardware. So with that Psystar is in the clear and looking good.

Actually it was a court case. That was talked about in the article below.
