this is why i always put my OS and installed programs on a seperate partition. you can format the OS partition and still keep all the files from your installed software and games. while you still have to reinstall said software, 95% of it will detect the old .cfg files and the like and keep it, and a good portion of it will even detect the existing data files and not bother copying it to disk, it'll just update the registry entries so that the software installs correctly. saves HOURS upon HOURS of installation/setting prefered configuration etc etc. the only cost is that every time you install something you have to manually edit C:\\ to D:\\

you dont need to upgrade. 3.25GB is enough ram for anything your probably doing.

EDIT: i have vista x64 and it is good though. get home premium x64 OEM. basic sucks and ultimate is a rip off imho.

Nice one thanks, I've added this now. How can I check to see if it has worked?

I'll have to buy Vista when I have some spare cash!

You can't upgrade from a 32bit operating system to a 64bit operating system. You will need to do a clean install.

Why ? is the 32 much worse than 64? Or you just want to make it clear so he does not mistake the two version ask the same thing again?

I am using 32bit vista and it seem fine, my friend have the 64 and it is a pain in the ass since it is slower and very keen on some software.

You don't have to change xp to vista 64. You can have all 4 gb on 32bit OS. It's small trick, but you must have windows xp professional only with service pack 1.

You must do:

1. Set PAE
a) Open boot.ini on C:/ with use Notepad
b) On end last line you must write /PAE, so it look like that

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINDO WS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINDOWS="Micr osoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /PAE

c) Save the file
2. Reboot system and you have 4gb on 32bit OS

I know it's little crap, beacuse you will have service pack 1, but it's only way.

hey guys how am I able to get 4gb show up on a xp 32bit computer? I remember I had a similar problem with my vista 32bit not showing up 4gb however I was able to do something which know I don't really recall, to actually get the full 4gb showing. What did I do? and is it possible to do it with the xp?

Please refrain from bumping a year old thread, people prefer a new thread

Anyway, i believe you can't do it with a x86 OS, it just isn't possible (but the amount visible depends on the hardware, i believe that is why people get different amounts showing up).
