E6750 OCing - Kinda stuck - New to this

Thread Starter
I did my first build about 2 months ago. I'm new to the OCing. But I have been reading up quite a bit on all the various sites. All the stickies. So I thought it was about time to make my first OCing post.

I'm not trying to do anything extreme. I would just like to push my CPU to 3 Ghz or so. Which from what I have read should be able to do on stock cooling and maybe not even a V-core increase. I know every chip is different. That's what makes it fun.

So, here's what I got. I can't seem to get my FSB past 1450. Which gives me about 2.9. That's even ok with me. But I am still getting random lock-ups when stablility testing with Prime 95. It takes about 1 hour or so. I tried seeing what just running my OS would do for stability. It seems to after about an hour or so lockup when I have music playing or something (media player). Which I didn't really think put much of a load on the CPU/RAM.

I leave my RAM unlinked and set at 800. Should I try lowering my RAM to 725 so I have 1:1? I have lowered my Multi to 6 to see if I could just increase the FSB and narrow down the bottle neck. But even at 6, my FSB won't do much past 1450. It will POST, just not stable. At 1500 or so, it won't POST or if it does (maybe a couple times) Windows wouldnt load. I didn't think it was my RAM, cause Im not OCing that at all.

I also did try bumping the V-core and NB up just one notch. I think my board goes up .015 v at a time or something. It lasted longer but just not that stable. Temps using Coretemp read max load of 61 on the core. I realize that is stock cooling.

So...maybe I'm at this FSB hole I read about, or maybe I just was an unlucky one to get a chip that's tolerance didn't go much beyond the 2.6 that it's sold as...

Just asking for any other suggestions. Who knows, maybe this MSI board isn't that great. The forum that is dedicated to the P6N Platinum is mostly posted with users OCing the 8400 Wolfdales and are REALLY pro's so I don't find anything specific to my chip.

If I gotta leave it at 2.6 no biggie. I just kind of hit a wall. Anyway, thanks for reading and replying.

What is the vcore that you are using and the voltage on your nb and ram. You should get higher. Close to 3.6 at less.

I'm not completely familiar with the E6750 and more importantly...the multiplier.

What is the multi for that setup? It seems that 1450 FSB is an awful high FSB to try and hit 3.0Ghz (I'm used to the x9 multi's).

Perhaps a change in multi will help you. If 9x is available to you, 1333 x 9 is a ton easier to keep stable then 7x or 8x.

The e6750 is a exx50 chip, meaning it runs at 1333 fsb stock. Some motherboards can't OC these well without a bios update.

Once that's done, use a QDR of 1500, bump your voltage only slightly from stock, and try to boot. 3 ghz is a breeze with ANY C2D.

QDR? =s

3ghz on a E6750 should be extremely easy - put the voltages to stock, put a divider on the memory so that it is running below stock, and just put the FSB straight to what you need to 3ghz...that should work. If not, try upping the VCore one "notch" and the FSB/GMCH voltages one "notch" also.

On some boards, you have to enter your FSB x 4, Quad data rate. FSB properly said is usually much lower than 1500 .

Ahh, rep+ - haven't heard that term before.

FSB = QDR/4 then

Yeah all I have is 8,7, or 6. I'm not familiar at all with what let's you have other multi's.

I always wondered how people get to 9 or even much higher with the AMD chips. I guess it's all in the architecture or something.

As for the voltage:

NB according to BIOS - 1.25
V-core according to CPU-Z - mostly 1.344...will fluctuate to 1.336 sometimes (this is default)
My RAM I have set to 2.1 (it's rated Voltage) and I forgot say that I have loosened my timings to 5-5-5-15 recently. RAM is rated at 4-4-4-12

Oh, and I have all of my Speedstep, C1E, power saving all turned off. Also all my spread spectrum is off.

WOW many replies made before I had a chance to read and repost.

Yeah my MOBO reads my FSB with no /4. It's just a straight 1333 at default. Not 333.

The higher the model number of the chip, generally the higher the multiplier.

My E6700 has a multiplier of 10 and a FSB of 266 (at stock that is)

You can also get Black Edition (AMD)/Extreme Edition (Intel) chips which have fully unlocked multipliers.
