evga geforce 8600 gts lapping

Thread Starter
I'm going to lap my 8600 gts, but before I take the cooling system off(stock) will I need any thermal tape, or pads, or will thermal paste work? A link to a good guide for taking apart evga cards would be appreciated if anyone has a link!

There's no point in lapping if you have the stock cooling on the gpu tbh...

EDIT: Kopi that's the first reaction I had lol.
are you lapping the heatsink? or the core itself? Because lapping the core itself is a BAD idea from what I've heard.

Thermal paste will work, and its just a matter of unscrewing the screws on the back and it comes right off

I am going to have to say it is pointless to lap the gpu. Maybe putting some AS5 on it would help but lapping it is pointless. You are going to run into issues with not enough voltage before you have heat problems. Thats what I found with my HD3870.

It might work if you were using an 8800 becaused it has an IHS, but I don't think the lower end cards are set up that way.
Thoes cards just have the gpu die exposed, lapping that is certain suicide!
