[dvHW] AMD Radeon HD 4870 is 20% faster than GeForce 9800 GTX - Page 6

Wow...

But actually on topic, I hope this helps AMD get back some market share. AA performance should be a lot better too, so good for them

Wait what? You asked why the older 360 GPU still looks good compared to R600 even though the R600 is much more powerful right? I don't think I understand your question.

relax people, these are the same people who said that the 8600GTS would have 64SPs and a 256bit bus.

so they have no credibility.

If I had a guestimate on performance, I'd say that overall it will be around 25-45% faster than the 9800GTX. that'd be about 1/3rd faster in most situations.

What gives?

And no, it's not a secret that the 2900 and 3870 have weak shading performance, and that is one of the main things that pulls them down compared to nvidia.
Developers can optimize the game specifically for the hardware in the 360's, which is exactly the same for each system. Also, the sole purpose of the machine is for gaming, unlike PCs. If I remember correctly, the PS3 has about a 7800GTX equivalent or so, and that system runs some games at constant 60fps (CoD4) while even some of the newer (2 generations newer) Nvidia cards can barely do so. If you tried to run CoD4 on a PC with a 7900GTX at the same resolution at PS3 runs, I bet the 7900GTX would run slower. It's not a problem with ATI.

Consoles also generally only get around 25-30 fps in games with lower quality settings and no AA and AF at low resolutions upscaled. Which is MUCH easier to handle than trying to play a game on a pc at a resolution like 1600*1200 with full quality settings and AA/AF.

Hmm, thought it would have competed against the 9800 GX2.

Two-4870X2...with new improved drivers...to push the envelope from quad-fire to Oco-Fires(8-GPUS')....I heard this from someone within AMD/ATI....expect the 4870X2 a few weeks after Nvidia launches their new summer series...so that ATI can optimise the 4000 series to perform better than Nvidia.

The drivers for two 4870X2 cards will follow towards end of the summer....two 4870X2 cards = 8-GPUS'~!!!

Actually most (at least for the 360) games run at 60 frames (example COD4). Also because of the embedded ram for the 360 it can do 4x AA with little performance impact because of the 256GB/s of bandwidth provided. Also most games run at 720P natively. Though for 1080P im pretty sure alot of games are upscaled and deinterlaced.

So your saying the 4870x2 will have 4 cores? Yea..
