No, he's saying that using two cards with two cores each you have a total of eight cores. Duh, its basic maths.

Or maybe he's implying that they'll have 8-way crossfire available for four 4870x2's - which actually would be pretty sweet when paired with octo-core Nehalems.

Two cards with two cores each? That'd be 4 cores my friend.

20% isn't saying much, considering the spec sheet shows far greater numbers for the 4870, including the number of stream processors, 55nm, GDDR-5, and high stock frequency. Why, may I ask, are the numbers so greatly advanced beyond the 9800 GTX and yet it's only pulling a 20% lead?

And how about vs the GX2? What, a 5% increase, if any increase at all? The next nVidia cards will surely beat the HD 4xxx cards without a problem, and with less-bloated numbers. If not, I will be seriously surprised. This isn't really neck and neck either, considering the 9800 cards are a rehash of the old G92 cores, which says a lot about how well the nVidia GPUs and architecture is doing in the gaming world, where they can re-use old GPUs and still keep a solid lead until AMD/ATI's next cards came out (the 4 series), and pretty soon the next wave of nVidia cards are going to be released, which will put nVidia back in the top... again.

it's just an evolution of the R600 arch. It isn't anything new really. 20% over the 9800GTX is what, a 50% overall increase from the last generation? Yea, you're right, that's crap...

orly. Provide me ANY benchmarks about the 9900s. ill be just fine with ONE!. Seriously. Don't talk like that. The product isn't even out for sale yet, drivers are barely optimized yet. By the time it gets to market, there will DEFINATLY be an improvement over that 20% atm.

Not only that but, HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICE! AMD ISN"T AFTER PERFORMANCE CROWN. THEY ARE AFTER BEST BANG FOR BUCK.

ugh.

the 9900s are expected to be 500$ if i remember correctly. These ones: 250. Good job. now compare that GX2 of yours with it. Great, same performance for HALF THE PRICE. Leme see which one ill buy.....

EDIT: As said by someone in this thread.

Guys, the 4870 isnt supposed to beat the 9900GTX/Ultra. Those cards will be 600-700$... these cards are under 300$.

Well, I don't know about you, but I'd rather pay under $300 for the top tier, not $500, so Ati looks to have another mainstream winner here.

You can't really compare the specs between the two and say that the 4870 will be superior. Yes, it has more shaders just looking at the numbers, but Nvidia and ATI count shaders differently so the numbers don't really mean much. A 20% advantage over the 9800GTX would be pretty impressive if it is reflected in games (I'm optimistic, but I do have reasonable doubt), especially since the 4870 isn't even ATi's flagship card, the 4870X2 is (will be).

Will the 9900/GTX200 series beat the 4800 series? Probably, but the price difference will probably be a lot more than the performance difference. I think the real competition will be for performance/$. I really see no point in comparing cards by generations instead of price. You aren't going to buy a lower performing card just because it's a new generation, so why compare them that way? Sure it's useful to compare how fast a company is advancing, but when it comes down to actually buying the card you really just want the best for $x.

It doest need to. If nvidia didnt release 8800GT and 8800GTS 512 when it did ATI would we wining right now. Sure you thing 8800GTX its better but its the price that makes people get a GPU over everything. I personaly dont even consider a card exist after 300$ mark. Its same this CPU. EE cpu from intel are never going to be in my hands so why bother comparing.
