Less volts on FSB... more stability?

Alright so here is what is going on. I was trying to get my 8400 to go to 4.0 stable, but I kept having problems even getting into my BIOS after a bit where all it would do is flash the dash in the corner. Also, when it did go in, sometimes there would be weird symbols everywhere and just frozen. So i had to pull out the CMOS battery and let it reset before I could go any further. I realized that putting more volts into my 8400 and RAM was getting me no better stability, so i lowered my FSB voltage. It booted. (at 1.4 it booted, I was at 1.5). Then it would freeze a little bit after booting to a pink or brown screen. I lowered the voltage even more to 1.3 and it hasn't happened yet.

Am I right in suspecting that my NB and SB are overheating under the high voltages?

wow thats cool, at 4.0ghz shouldnt you have like a waterblock on your northbridge?

It's an E8400. Those clock to 4Ghz with no problems.

I had the same experience on my 780i. 1.55vMCH is the max, anything more reduces stability. However my chip needs 1.4v to reach 4.2GHz that the 467FSB I'm doing. I think it's got more FSB in it too.

It's true that a component/chip not getting enough voltage can subsequently run unstable. But it's also true that excessive heat (which can result from increased voltage) can cause a chip to run unstable, as well.

(Sorry if I'm just stating the obvious.)

Just an update on this. As a result of lowering my voltages for my NB and SB and what not, I have been able to acheive much lower voltages on other components. For example my 8400 will now run stable (OCCT for 30 mins) at 1.264v before Vdroop. instead of 1.33v.

*Will be running Orthos tests*
