q9450 v q6700

okay this is like the third thread on this I know but I want to try something new.

I know the 9650 is more money but lets put that aside. (espeacially since im just gonna sell the e8400 anyways)

What kind of clock speeds do you think I will achieve with either? I am more leaning towards the 9650 but I am still not to sure about it.

I run my e8400 at 4.35 24/7 no problems but with my 2 9800 gx2s I think my benches are not really gonna get much better with a dual core.

Between the Q9450 and Q6700, I'd definitely take the Q6700.

Sure, the Q9450 is 45nm, and is slightly faster clock for clock. But the 8x multiplier can limit your maximum overclock - while the 10x multi of the Q6700 is likely to give you a better max OC. This is due to less FSB strain at the same final frequency. I'd bet that improvement in max overclock would more than compensate for the 45nm's faster clock-for-clock speed.

Keep in mind the Q6700 costs around $275-300, while the Q9450 costs around $350-375. The Q6600 is, IMO, an even better choice if considering price - a 9x multi for only ~$225

I would pick Q6700 over Q9450 based on the price, vcore and multi.

I'm quite surprised that you guys are recommending last generation processors simply on the basis of a higher multiplier and price. The 45nm chips (Q-9450 especially, but the Q-9300 also to a lesser extent), have other qualities which make them worthy of consideration. To begin with, they are optimized for video encoding and processing, and are about 30% faster than the previous generation chips, clock for clock. Also, the 12MB cache of the Q-9450 keeps it ahead of the Q-6600 and Q-6700 in games.

Johnny Bravo at Extreme Systems did a heads-up comparison between the Q6600 and the Q9450 here. I urge you to check that out.

uhhhhhh, where did you get that info? the 45nm chips are 5-10% faster clock for clock, not 30% (maybe 30% in sse4 apps, and there are ZER0 games that use that, its a video editing thing)
you will max out a Q9450 @ 3.6ghz on most mobos (450x8) but the Q6700 will hit 3.8-4GHZ, making it pretty close, but the Q6700 is like $100 cheaper, so its a better deal. and its widely available.

edit: i saw you were talking about video editing. but thats only in sse4 apps (very few).

I have had my 9450 clocked at 3.92 GHz, the only thing holding that back is my waterblock had a leak so it's on a Tuniq Tower 120 and at that speed/voltage it's running high 80's Cent. at full load. So I BACKED DOWN my Q9450 to 3.7GHz. So when it is on water, I wont be surprised to hit 4GHz+ with the 9450. Plus the 12MB cache is a nice bonus. All of this on the Intel X38 Bone Trail.

And at 3.8 it runs 6000+ pts CPU score in 3dmark06 - anyone know what the Q6600 score is at 3.9?
