I dont hear of any core2s failing unless the person is an idiot and overvolting. Case closed. I dont get where you get your info from but...

I have to agree.

The longest lasting Intel chip I've ever had was my old 386 overclocked from 33MHz to 40MHz. The other 2 Intel chips I've had since then have failed at stock speeds. Verified by CPU swapping to get the systems working again. Intel P 166MHz, Intel Celery 500MHz.

The longest lasting AMD chip I've had was my old K6 slot CPU. Still kickin' after 10 years at my cousin's house as a small media server. In fact, all 4 AMD CPU's I've had are still kickin' as far as I'm aware. K6 slot, Athlon 1.4GHz (Socket A, Thunderbird core, though the MSI board I had failed. CPU was sold, kickin' as of 2005), Athlon64 3000+ AM2 Orleans (In a friend's system now, works great), and my current.

Surely it's just been bad luck with Intel, as I see many old and abused Intel chips working great, but my personal experience is AMD lasts longer.

Same as Sony products all failing for me. Every one of them. Even my alarm clock.

Can't call me a fanboy, I recommend Intel chips to many if the situation and budget says that'd be the best option for their needs.

I Have to agree and disagree to this..my A64 3700 at 3ghz was much more instant and had no lag at all opening apps and stuff compared to my friends E2180 at 3ghz..but then again now my Q6600 at 3ghz is on another level, no matter how many things i open it is instant and it has no lag..i love quad core.

Its not just with loading programs - thats most typical however.
Its in EXECUTING tasks - and in this one case study that I did (indentical PC's save CPUs) the Pentium 4 just always had this lil lag (under the load of winamp + a RAM warmer) when opening applications.

I dont doubt you on this mootfox. I've noticed what you described in similar scenarios.
But thats just it! - look at the margin of difference between those 2 chips!
A C2D is faster than a 170! much less a Quad.

Put it this way - I've noticed, that up untill PI4, speaking in pound for pound, freq (MHZ) terms, the intel chip is typically inferior to the AMD in terms of RESPONSIVENESS.. or what I like to call snappyness.

This may speak nothing to how long each would take to say.. encode a dvd (in that era - intel chips usually had the advantage there)...

but its defiantly something that I (and some friends of mine) have noticed.

BTW could we PLEASE drop or usually unmitigated fanboi-ism? And speak/reason objectively... for ONCE!?

I know some of you just love the heated, hard-headed and many times biosed ranting
(hence posts like these;

Grim: I think it's common knowledge that a P4 (netburst) chip is inferior to an Athlon chip of the same generation... not only in terms of lag but in EVERY aspect in terms of performance. That in your case a P4 (as expected) is slower than a comparible athlon, doesn't mean this applies accross the board...

Yes, I couldnt argue that it does - seeing that I've only seen this up to PIV.

But might I say chozart, that its not just with the netburst generation of chips - but with MOST earlier chips.
The only machines that I cant .. cognitively remember this being the case with (during my benching) were the PIIs that I tested / (just used really).

But I HAVE noticed this with the C2D too.

as well as the manifestation of that BUG that they have too might I add - nothing severe though.

What I still marvel at is their impressive overclockability.....

Personally, I have no issues with lag whatsoever with any of the Core 2 Duo chips I've owned (now or in the past, and that's an E2160, an E6400, two E6600's, an E6700, a Xeon 3210, and two E6750's - I might have missed a chip here). I found no significant difference in startup times compared to the Opty 170 I owned prior to the Core 2 Duo CPUs.

i can tell you clock for clock my intel rig opens up files faster then my friends 5000+ BE setup. i notice lag on his rig and none on mine. and if my computer ever takes 2 seconds to open a program its a windows problem not my processor.
