HD3870x2 Game Lockups

Here's my big problem.. My computer is working perfectly in programs, video.. to say it short.. everything except 3d games. If i play Cod4 / Rainbow6vegas2/ Company of heroes, the game will freeze and the computer locks up, and my only option is the reset button. (Happends anywhere between 1 mins to 20 mins after game start.)

I tought this had something to do with "fan problems" on the 3870 cards, but my card doesnt get hot, i've tried to play with the "vacum cleaner " on 100% and i've played with auto cooling on, and the fan adjusts itself.

I tought asus smartdoctor was the problem, but i've ruled that one out. Its listed as a possible problem on many cod4 freeze/lockup forums. But i played cod4 with rivatuner setting the fan speed @ 60% instead. (I get 50C max)

Drivers: Catalyst 8.4 with hotfix for vista64
DirectX10 latest.
Bios: 3870 master - 113-B40001-104 (stock)
3870 slave - 113-B40001-103 (stock)
Core/mem clocks: 825/900 (stock)

Oh, and my computer is stable in orthos.. Only running 2gb of ram now, because i had to rma one set.

Any help appreciated!

I recall some people referring to a firmware update for some of the 3800 cards... whether its relative I can not say.

i cant find anything on "firmware". But i've read alot on flashing the 2 bios chips on the card. Not that i really want to do this. The "only" update i found on techpowerups list was a bios that was "incompatible" according to atiwinflash.

Update: I've removed all drivers - and went on asus homesite and downloaded driverpacks from there. (Previous drivers wore downloaded off the ati site).

Now i have asus 8.4 cat drivers, with asus logo's on everything. But the only difference now is that i cant play "between 1 min and 30mins."

Now it locks up after 30 seconds max.

Edit: i've read that some cards acted this way with AA on, i've tried with AA off, and saw no differance.

Update: Alright, this HAS to be the gfx card. I've tried for several hours and days to figure this out.. And now i got my hands on a 1800xt card, replaced the 3870x2, and ive played for many hours without any errors/freezes or lockups.

If its not the gfx, something is terribly wrong with my mb support for the 3870x2.

Any inputs please?

Mem hole or fsb hole, i dont know exacly.. Means that the Motherboard wont run at a certain speed.

I had my fsb on 400 and could not play games, so i had it on 333 instead. But when i tried 410.. everything worked. So there is a "hole" on 400.

Grunion and I had the exact same problem. Before you ask... No I haven't figured it out. Sapphire suggests that I RMA it back to them. I don't really see how it would be fixed by another card but meh. Guess ill try it.

Maybe something to do with the motherboard?
I have the same card and my games run great.
COD4,BF2,HL2 all the games I play.
And Im playing COD4 and HL2 maxed at 1920x1080.
