P5KC + Corsair6400 CAS4

Hey there

I'm having a problem with a friend's new Mobo + new memory. He's got a P5KC and a 2x1GB PC6400 4ns memory kit from Corsair.

Now the problem doesn't reside with Overclocking... rather with stock! I manually set the DRAM voltage to 2.1V, the timings to 4-4-4-12, FSB at 400 and... the memory sticks fail the latest memtest like there's no tomorrow. No traces of OC. Everyhting else on auto.

Now my own Corsair sticks are identical to his, except he's got the model with the extra large aluminum heatsink. I've got a P5K-e WiFi mobo. I can do 4-4-3-9 @ 2.1V with 417 Mhz FSB... while he can't do the advertised 4-4-4-12 at stock speeds!

Any idea what the problem might be? Are the sticks defective? Is the mobo incompatible with cas4?

Well the motherboard might not support the mem speed (400mhz). That is what happened to me and i had to set it a little higher so my motherboard would support the speed.

The sticks might be defective. If your friend is running vista, does he get the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH

What do you mean by 4ns kit?

If it's a kit with 4 sticks, you may have to overvolt the NB/MCH a tad. 1.4v should do the trick.

If you can't get those sticks working at stock, give corsair a call. They're tech support usually answer in <5 minutes, and they've never failed to solve a problem for me. Part of the reason I keep buying corsair modules, actually. And they're not afraid of making "unofficial" OCing suggestions, or telling you what they think are safe guidelines for a particular module, even if they don't officially support it. But as far as getting their sticks running at stock, they can definately either work out your problem for you, or at least suggest a return/authorize an RMA.

By 4ns kit I mean a Dual-channel kit that supports 4ns latency. In other words, a CL4 kit.
.
The above-mentioned sticks run 5-5-5-15 dual-chan without any issues (10 hr memtest) at stock speeds. Either stick fails memtest with 4-4-4-12 latencies and stock speeds.

I guess I'll try overclocking by a few mhz, tho I don't see why they wouldn't be stable at default speeds. If that fails I'll try overvolting... and if that fails it's RMA time.

Calling Corsair isn't an option as they don't have any tech support in my country.

Any other ideas on the issue? Could the P5KC be the culprit? Maybe the BIOS (running latest BIOS)?
