need help installing IDE hard drive as slave

Thread Starter
I just built a comp which includes a SATA hard drive as the primary one that will be used. I need to install an old Ultra ATA drive in order to transfer some files from it to the new one. The jumper settings on the old drive are unfamiliar to me and I can't find the manual for it online (I guess since it's old). Here are the jumper settings listed on top of the hard drive...
(I'll use x's for one jumper and y's for the other, oo's are the pins)

Jumper Setting (lower 32gb): (for slave)
-MA: oo
-SL: xx
-CS: oo
- : oo

Jumper Setting (upper 32gb): (for slave)
-MA: ox
-SL: ox
-CS: oy
- : oy

Jumper Setting (32gb clip): (for slave)
-MA: oo
-SL: xx
-CS: oy
- : oy

Which jumper layout would I use to make the hard drive a slave? The model number is SV8004H from Samsung. Anything else I should know about mixing an ultra ata hard drive with a SATA?

Thanks in advance.

try posting a picture. I really don't understand what the layouts are. I usually use Cable select. (CS)

Like this

Jumper Setting
-MA: oo
-SL: oo
-CS: XX
- : oo

Also you only use one jumper on the hard drive. I may be wrong but that is the way I have always done it.

Sorry I can't post a picture (no camera), I'll try using CS and see if it works.

Why don't you just keep it simple?

If the drive was a master in the old computer, install it as a master in this one. If it was a slave, install it as a slave with a CDROM or something on the same cable.

This way you don't need to worry about jumpers.

Also do you have another ide device?

The slave setting is used when you are using more than one device on a single ide cable. If this is the only device on the ide cable then it should be a slave. The master and slave reference is in reference to the cable not to the entire system.

Hope this helps.

I've never built a comp using an IDE hard drive before, so I really don't know how jumpers/masters/slaves work. I would like to install it as a slave with a CD rom on the same cable, but I'm not sure how (I thought you needed jumpers?)

EDIT: Yea I have a DVD burner on the same cable, sorry I should have mentioned this. When I try starting the computer it sticks at "Detecting IDE devices..."

My recommendation...

Set the jumpers on the IDE drive to "Cable Select" and then attach the IDE drive to the grey connector on a normal 80 pin IDE cable. The Black connector is usually reserved for the master drive.

Either way, in your BIOS tell the system that your SATA is your boot drive and you should be good to go from there.

did you notice that I said "80 pin cable"...

you must be referring to a 40 pin cable. Most drives today use an 80 (especially if he has SATA ports on the computer as well.)

80 pin on the left 40 pin on the right

40 pin cables don't have the Blue and Grey connectors... and I specifically referred to the GREY connector. Please don't confuse the two.
