SPLIT: Narrowed it down to two laptops.... - Page 3

Between those two listed, the gateway for sure.

Toshiba has some laptops in the X205-SLI series with an SLI setup, I'd look into those?

This is the laptop i found at bestbuy. Not exactly the same (model P-6860FX on bestbuy instead of P-172S FX, the processor is a T5500 rather than 5750. The HD is also 320 instead of 160 at bestbuy. Odd.
Anyone come up with some lower prices for the P-172S FX?

I would try to find out if EITHER lappy has a spare mem-slot. If only one has, I would buy that one and tell the vendor that you want vista64. If they both have, I would go with the Gateway (Unfortunately... (I hate the company) ) because it has:-

1) A warranty on the battery (unusual)
2) 7200rpm HDD (tosh has 5400)

This is sad, really, because I much prefer Tosh over Gateway... but in this case *sob* The GW looks nicer to me.

Wow, i totally didn't see the warranty on the battery, thats amazing!
Thank you, I'll probably end up going with the gateway after all.

just one thing: yes the 7200rpm is going to be faster, but it will also be hotter and louder.

just a heads up, I know most people don't care, but for a laptop those things matter a bit more than desktops (imo).

I have a gateway notebook, got it two years ago, and I have had ABSOLUTELY no problems with it. It was nothing top-of-the-line, but it's a solid, well-crafted notebook with no extraneous riff-raff to go wrong. Plus, while I haven't had to use their customer support, I called about the case of dead pixels ('cause it happens), and they seemed helpful, and were prompt to reply.

Toshiba on the other hand... My sister has a Toshiba notebook, and from her issues, I'd never buy one. Perhaps in the past they were branded as the enthusiast's notebook, they are no longer. Their quality is poor at best, and their customer support is completely lacking. Her optical drive went bad twice--the first time, she called CS, and they told her she had to take the notebook to a local Toshiba authorized dealer/repair shop to get it serviced (as opposed to speedy ship-in-ship-out service that gateway uses), which took two weeks FOR A LOCAL SHOP. And guess what...optical drive went out again. As opposed to dealing with the awful service features of Toshiba, she's opted to use an external drive... Plus, she had massive problems with the system until we swapped out her ram for better-quality RAM. All sources say NO to Toshiba IMHO.

Plus, the Gateway has better specs if you're worried about not having to upgrade as soon.

Can you guys give me some reasons other than just saying go with the gateway??
Toshiba laptops (Not sure if they still do) have a tendency of the MoBo going on you unexpectedly.

I would say Gateway after my experience with Toshiba..

Well, I found a laptop that beats the hell out of all of these. It has fantastic review for gaming, and I'm looking forward to getting it.
Say hello to My Little Friend

Just kidding. I got the Gateway P-172S FX

Should be coming in on June 5th.
