I was considering upgrades eventualy. I was curious if a 45nm quad would work on my board.

The 45nm Intel CPU's will not work on a 680i. You'd have to go to the 7** series.

From what i have read the 680i's only support 45nm duals.

I know that they will support dual 45nms though.

45nm do work on the 680i chipset, except Quad 45nm. Duo's your fine....
