Linux on a PS3

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone can answer the following questions, as I'm very curious as to what changes when you install a distro of linux on a PS3. Does it change the ability of it to play games? Does it boot up to the PS3 dashboard, and then you select the option to boot into linux?

Thanks.

When you put Linux on a PS3, it becomes the primary OS. From there, and it depends on the Distro, you can enter a command to get back to the PS3 OS, _OR_ you can turn on the ps3 by holding your finger over the power button for about 10 seconds, as that resets everything on your PS3, including boot order. When you want to get back, you goto system, settings, boot other os and you're golden. It doesn't hinder your ability to game, unless you use almost all of the HDD. I used 20ish GB for the install, and since a few games need to have install data on the HDD, you may want to use even less. Overall, its just point click to get back to the PS3 or the Distro. Hope that helps.

Take a look at this guide.

I found no benefit as long as I have a PC of installing linux, but it is def. something to experience.

Some more info, I'd only recommend Gentoo for the PS3. The PS3 cores are PPC cores and most of the time there aren't any/updated packages (debian, ect) for the PPC architecture. Since Gentoo compiles everything you can avoid alot of this trouble.
