What 3.6GHz is best?

Is having 3.6GHz at 360x10, 400x9,or 450x8 better?

Myself and others will tell you that having the FSB speed up certainly doesnt hurt things. It makes the speed which information travels around that much quicker. I would run an 8x multiplier (and did for a long time) but at speeds in excess of 450mhz fsb the motherboard starts to complain. for 3.6ghz, Id say 8x is best. For 3.7ghz and above, you almost have to run 9x multipliers unless your board is capable of 460mhz+. A few are able, a lot arent.

more FSB is generally better, but if a lower FSB and higher multi also lets you run a higher strap on your RAM, you may get better performance at the lower FSB.

example:
450 x 8 with 900MHz RAM (1.00x) will outperform 360x10 with 900MHz RAM (1.25x).
but...
450 x 8 with 900MHz RAM (1.00x) probably won't outperform 400x9 with 1000MHz RAM (1.25x). [assuming equivalent RAM timings]

It all depends on what speeds your RAM and MCH are capable of running at. All things being equal more FSB is better, sure, but if a lower FSB lets you run your RAM faster that may no longer be true. When in doubt, run benchmarks to see what works better. In addition to the futuremark benches, I'm a fan of superpi 1M and 32M, as well as the SiSoft Sandra benches (processor arithmetic, memory and cache, and memory latency and bandwidth benchmarks).

450 would be the best, but i imagine if you put the multi @ 8 you could probably get the FSB to 380 and have a 3.8ghz chip, that would be the best.

All other frequencies being equal, an increased FSB speed theoretically means a faster computer. The multiplier is just a the way of achieving a final frequency. In and of itself, the number (multi) does nothing. It's just the amount the FSB is 'multiplied' to obtain the CPU's actual frequency. So yes, (not considering other factors) 450x8 should be faster than 360x10. I hope that explains it well.

PS: Keep in mind, 450x8 is typically harder to achieve than 360x10. The FSB strain typically requires not only higher CPU V-Core, but higher Front Side Bus voltage (among other voltages).

Whether or not 380FSB x 10 (3.8GHz) or 450FSB x 8 (3.6GHz) is faster for you, is something you'll have to benchmark to find out. I like to say; if you're unsure, bench it!
