Need Help, Never overclocked before!!!

Thread Starter
Hi there. I just made a new computer (EVGA 780i mobo, 2 8800gtx's, 8 gig of ram @ 800mhz, 1TB HDD space, intel core 2 duo e6750 @2.66 ghz, 750w PSU) I have never overclocked before and I would like to overclock my cpu because it is my system bottleneck at the moment (I believe) and I'm afraid to OC. I don't know where to begin or how to begin. I have seen stuff online about upping voltages and changing clocks and I don't know what to do. Can someone help me? Thanks

Curt

Read This First

Then begin to ask question cause that covers almost all of them

go to the bios and look at your CPU's speed. the FSB (front side bus) should be listed as either 333 or 1333. if its 333, set it to 400, if its 1333, set it to 1600.

then your cpu will be @ 3.2ghz. hopefully, it will work

Also, remember that when you overclock, the CPU creates more heat. If you are running under the stock heatsink, you will most likely need a different heatsink. The TRUE (Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme ) or Tuniq Tower 120 are my personal favourites.

As the above poster said, upping the Front Side Bus (FSB) is what changes the frequency of the processor. They are linked by a multiplier which basicly multiplies the FSB (which is divided by 4, I don't remmeber why, but lets say your FSB is 1600, the actual FSB is 400. Multiply that number by your multiplier and you get your CPU's clock speed. (example, 7,8, or 9x are multiplieers for most) ) As the frequency of the CPU gets higher, it requires more voltage to be able to run, and in turn, more voltage creates more heat which is why you may need a new heatsink for your CPU. Also, too much voltage and/or heat can kill the CPU. The E6--- series are quite durable though. Look around for some safe voltages in FAQ or other posts. Also get some temperature monitoring programs like CoreTemp. Take a look at that FAQ in the first reply to this. It seems hard and confusing as first, but in the end you end up learning how things work. Good luck!

(Someone please correct me if any of my info is wrong. I am quite sure it is all right but I would hate to give out wrong info)

Well, thank you guys so much for your help so quickly. I am not using stock cooling, but I am using the OCZ Vanquisher CPU Cooler. Is that sufficient? I hope it is (even though it only cost me around $30) Thanks again for the help
