Just Installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and I/O Errors during startup

Thread Starter
Like the title says I have errors regarding I/O after the Ubuntu splash screen goes away after loading. This is just first try at Linux and am not sure what to do or what I might have done wrong. Right now I am reinstalling under windows XP which should finish shortly and I will retry booting. Ubuntu has its own 160 GB partition in which it is installed on by the way if that helps any.

What are the errors? "involving I/O" is pretty vague

Post the errors here, so we can try to help you. You coud also try the "Ubuntu alternate" version, it gives you more setup freedom.

definitely post up the errors when you get the chance. Could be a simple misdirected grub menu problem or something a little more serious. We will be able to help either way and welcome to linux!

I boot up my machine as normal and when it prompts me to choose an OS, I select Ubuntu and the splash screen comes up as normal with the progress bar. After about a minute or two, that goes away and then shows a command screen that I myself cannot enter anything on but it shows

[ 188.214662] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
[ 200.351004] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
[ 200.883308] Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 156284912

It continues on and on in the same fashion getting up in the 650.00000 or so for a few minutes then just goes to a black screen with a letter curser blinking as it does in command but I can not do anything but turn the power off. I assume that this has something to do with my HDD..??

The first two are the system trying to connect to a floppy drive - if you don't have one you should probably disable it in BIOS.

The third seems like it is your problem. It's detecting a problem on your second disk, first partition. Is that where you installed ubuntu?

I don't have a floppy, so I will disable that. I installed on the second partition on the mail HDD. Its a 320g drive an its split in half. Drive letter E is its label. I also have two 320g drives in RAID0

Ok, I just tried booting with the floppy disabled. Those errors no longer show up. Now when it boots, it shows the splash screen then precedes with text saying

BusyBox x1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
