Buying a laptop in a month or 2, any suggestions?

Thread Starter
hey guys, i havnt really been into computers lately, and im not too sure on what i should go for in about 2 months. Im thinking about picking up a dell XPS laptop for college / university, but im unsure on what i should be looking at. (Mainly the Proc and Vid Card.)

When i went to the dell site, there was a pretty large price difference between the 5xxx intel series, and the 8xxx series. Also, not knowing much about portable GFX, im hoping to get something decent that would possibly play TF2 at decent settings.

my price range is 1-2k w/ a 4 year warranty. (Laptops SUCK @ durability.)

thanks!

Stick with dell my friend.

They actually make very good laptops.

If your wanting to play TF2 look for a GPU like a 8600M or better ( If they make better )

Other than Dell computers, I know Asus has some pretty mean computers.

Stay away from companies like Alienware because they just jack the prices up. Another horrible company is IbuyPower. Their systems are absolute junk and their customer support is pretty much dumb.

*Note*

You can usually pick a fairly cheap laptop from dell and customize it to your needs. This will save you bucks.

If I were you I would pick the 'XPS M1530' upgrade the ram to 4GB, and get the 8600M.

That will be around 1200.00, im not sure how much the upgraded warranty is though.

yeah i agree, if i were ever to buy a laptop, i would buy a dell. stay away from intel integrated gfx, anything 8600 mobile or above should do you just fine. id say go for at least a 2.0 ghz dual core proc.

Looks like someone has not used or seen a Thinkpad eh?...I get so curious..i did this to my thinkpad about 3 weeks ago! They are the ultimate in durability my fine feathered friend (Except for the bulky panasonic toughbooks and such)

Just some testimonies on how good this laptop is built, i have dropped it maybe 5 times onto carpet..maybe 3 ft off the ground. And i have also stepped on it(not brave enough to jump yet lol)
Why is the thinkpad so durable you ask? Well taking apart showed me...

These parts are made of some magnesium alloy type metal(no sharp edges..almost feels like plastic lol)
First pic is the structural frame and second is the frame that keeps the LCD cover stiff so that when i stand on the top of lappy, it wont hurt the screen
