Review my OC Please

Thread Starter
Hi,

New to overclocking and i am after some advice on how i am going with my overclock.
I have spent alot of time reading articles and how to's before i entered into this world of overclocking so i hope i am on the right track.

This is where i am at so if yous see something wrong with my settings or there is something i can tweak up some more please fill me in, your help is appreciated.

My settings
Asus Striker 11 Formula 1202 bios
E8200 CPU stock cooler
DDR2 G.SKILL Twin Pack 2x1 gig 1066Mhz 5-5-5-15
Bios settings
Clock mode Unlinked
FSB set to 1700MHz gives me 3.4GHz
MEM set to 1066MHz MEM timing set to 5-5-5-15 2 clock
Loadline Calibration enabled
Nvidia GPU EX enabled

Volts
Vcore 1.25v
MEM 2.1v
NB 1.26v
The rest is Auto

Temps
Abundant 25c
CPU idle 48c Loaded running Orthos 66c (New cooler is comming)
NB Idle 57c Load 65c
SB idle 46c Load 52c

BFG 9800 GTX OCX overclocked
Core clock Stock 755Mhz oc to 805MHz
Shader clock Stock 1890MHz oc to 2000MHz
Memory clock Stock 1150MHz oc to 1230MHz

Temp with fan at 100%
Stock idle 44c loaded 67c
OC idle 46c loaded 70c

With the CPU overclocked @ 3.2GHz i could only get the graphics card overclocked to
Core 783MHz
Shader 1945MHz
Memory 1230MHz
There must be a bottleneck with the cpu and graphics card as i can get a higher overclock on the graphics with a higher overclock on the cpu.

With these settings my system runs stable and no errors with Orthos
(had it running for 4 hours)
Tested Graphics with ATI tool with no artifacs and ran 3Dmark06 4 times with no problems.
I have also played COD4, Crysis and BF2 for a few hours each with no problems.

New cooler is comming for CPU so i would like to up the CPU it some more, I now have the graphics back to stock OC settings as i found i only got an extra 430 points on 3Dmark 06 and gaming i got very little gain.

Questions
Do my settings look right
Can i tweak the Memory some more
Is there anything i have missed with these settings.

Thanks

I've seen, the higher you overclock a GPU, the more sensitive it becomes to temperatures.

OC your CPU over the GPU though, you will get a bigger performance gain with it over the video card.

Ok thanks for that low strife

I see what you mean with overclock the CPU over the GPU for a bigger performance gain. The GPU is back to stock as there was not much gain. Not worth it IMO.

Does the settings i have for overclocking the CPU look ok.

Thanks again

It looks fine, you may need active cooling on that NB, it´s kind of hot.

With your new cooler you may try to reach 450 8 3,6 (don´t use to much volt thou, those 45nm don´t seems to like it) and ramspeed 1080 5-5-5-15 2T Trc22, that would be a nice setup.

You usually get slightly increased in bandwidth and slightly decrease in latency if you go unlinked and use the known dividers as 1:2, 2:3, 3:5, 4:5, 5:6, 5:8 then with 1:1 unless you can go 1T or very tight timing with Nvidia´s Intel chipset and you got one so you can try 425 8 3,4 memspeed 800 (linked and sync) 4-4-4-12 1T Trc18.

And try to stay with those known dividers otherwise it seems that Nvidia´s chipset give you decrease bandwidth and increase latency.

Yep, that´s right

I don´t agree, it depends on what resolution and quality you run, if low resolution and low quality then yes, but if high resolution and high quality then no.

So basically OC both and you get a more responsive and snappier system that load applications faster (games for example) and you get a more fps.

Thanks for the info Ghostleader

450 8 3,6 is my aim with the new cooler

This is what i have done till my new cooler arrives

405 8 3.24 @ 1.2v Linked 3:2 which gives me Mem 1080 set timings 5-5-5-15 2T trc22
Everest Memory benchmark Latency 50.8 ns
Super PI 1m @ 14.375s

With these two test am i looking for higher or lower scores. (I assume lower)
Also does anyone know why Everest does not show my NB & SB temps, i see the usual temps and one named mpc 48c (what is this) but no NB or SB temp.

Thanks again the info is great.

Your welcome

450 8 3,6, gonna be a nice OC if you can reach it.

I use Everest 4.50.1355 b and with my Striker Extreme I could see my NB and SB temp but with my Gigabyte GA-680i-DQ6 I couldn´t see none of them.

You should look for SPP, (that´s NB) and MCP, (that´s SB) in Nvidia´s world .
