Id say Q6600 or Q6700 both are good for 3.4 or better, and great chips for gaming.
the E8400 is good too, but ive been seeing more and more of them not get to 4.0.
The only advantage of the Q6700 vs Q6600 and E8500 vs E8400 is higher multipliers. Might as well save your money if your board can handle a higher fsb. Of coarse if you aren't going to overclock then that won't matter.
If you aren't going to OC, get the E8400. It has a higher stock speed and will be good for gaming. If you are going to OC, get the Q6600 or Q6700. The Q6700 has a tendancy to OC a bit better, but either one is a good choice.
I choose the Q6600 as, although I do game, I do a lot of other stuff (usually while gaming), so I wanted a CPU that was better for all around use.
45nm.....far too finicky & fragile for my liking ....
i dont want to have to worry about a hot day & my cpu going 1c above what it likes & frying ...i prefer 65nm they take a serious beating & keep goin on like Ariston..lol
Duals do the best in gaming and as for DVD's and the like a 8400 would be only a few seconds slower than a quad. Quads are not worth the extra money as not many applications can fully unlock their potential. By the time software is released that can keep up with a quad, the "future proof" argument holds no water as a far better quad or other multi-core cpu will be available by then; imho.

I am saying go with the 8400, but I am not sure what you mean. Both the 8400 and any quad from intel have great stock speeds and if he oc's it then they both are monsters.

Totally agree. The visible gains from ever higher clocks hit a brick wall at some point.
