PS3's future? and their mistakes? - Page 3

While I do enjoy the choice of many SKUs, I can see how some potential customers would be turned away from PS3 solely because of backwards compatibility not being available anymore. Sony probably wanted to easy customers into the PS3 by initially including PS2 compatibility making it seem like an ordinary update into next-gen at launch.

Now that the system has been on the market for a while, they are now shifting more focus on PS3 titles rather than hanging on to PS2. That's not to say titles aren't being produced for PS2 anymore, it's just that isn't the focus now. Great games have come out and continue to come out for the system and Sony probably wants to solidify PS3's position in the market.

They know PS2 is still going strong but it's time to move forward, I guess. It would be a really great tactic to introduce a PS2 compatible SKU again. Some see it as a cost benefit by buying the 40gb model over the 60gb or 80gb, but some see it as a stripped down model.

I know I'm the only one that thinks backwards compatability is pointless, but really, once people play these new "next gen" games, going back to the old ones is a tough task imo. BC is nice when you're feeling nostalgic, otherwise if you have PS2 games that you're dying to play, you still have a PS2 to play them on presumably.

So with that, having BC is nothing more than a pointless argument as to which console is better imo.

Many of my daughter's kid movies are $10 or less. I refuse still to buy a $25 BR kid movie that she may or may not like. Children's movies make up a huge portion of actual movie sales, but not necessarily rentals.

I do have quite a few friends who have quite the JRPG's on PS2 and they would not give those up for anything. Given the lack of RPG's for PS3 I agree. They also tend to play the old school fighting games such as Street Fighter on PS2. Gameplay def. means more when it comes to a good fighter. To each his own really. I myself don't plan on purchasing any PS2 titles in the near future, but I might want to play the original God of War, Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, or some other games. If I really feel in the mood and go buy a game I want the support.

I have the 40GB model and use it every day to entertain my family and friends. It has been money well spent for me. I don't need to burn movies any more, just put the .AVI files on the thumb drive and plug it in to the ps3 and there it is. I have got GTA4 and once I get MGS and Gran Turismo I will be a happy man.

I am not a fan of sony. I have owned 2 x 360 (both dead) and 1 x PS3 (Alive and kicking).

Backwards Compat for me is a non-issue... I really do have ZERO interest in playing last-gen games on a current-gen console; having never owned a ps2 I will NEVER be buying a ps2 game to run on a current-gen console... and if one of my friends came to my house brandishing a "killer" last-gen game for me to try in my current-gen console, I would plant the disk firmly where the sun don't shine... sideways. Same reason as why I won't be buying Doom 1 or 2... or Zork... to play on my sig-rig. They are great games... but are served best in my memory (same as laplink LOL... man how the beers would flow)

I enjoyed my 360's but am enjoying my ps3 infinitely more; this is mainly due to upscaling and blu-ray. Game-wise I think that they both have some winning titles.

I am not sure that sony "shot themselves in the foot" in terms of variety of games. For one thing, I do not believe that the ps3 has shown its true gaming potential yet; graphically, assassins creed might come close... who knows?

I do agree that there is a lack of RPG on ps3.

I also enjoy your point/speculation that the current-gen consoles are transitional (you imply more transitional than from ps1 to ps2); this could quite easily be true - after all, these consoles are so much more powerful than their pre-decessors... and maybe sony with their "10 yr console" concept are just playing safe whils their devs are working like meercats-on-speed to get a better product out before MS.

Good post, RoddimusPrime.

I apologise if my post is in any way disjointed or random... I forgot to pick up my meds today.

You are quite right your post sir! Yeah, I am really interested in the next-gen consoles and what we may see.
