The reason backwards compatibility is essential is because there are people like me who are just moving into the console world and will need to catch up on some of the game storylines. If I can't play the first 3 MGS games (I've played most of the 1st one), then there is no point in buying the 4th as I won't know what the hell is going on. It is clearly possible to have backwards compatibility, so Sony only putting it on the more expensive consoles available (80GB) is complete crap, especially since the cheaper consoles (40GB) are more readily available and still high-priced.
