DSL VS Cable AT&T vs Timewarner??

Thread Starter
I have timewarner at home the fastest that money can buy, rated at 10mbps downstream. However at work they have AT&T DSL not even the fastest package you can get rated at 1.5-3.0 mbps downstream. Timewarner is located just less than a mile from my house, but I find AT&T to be faster at loading up webpages on my laptop at work, and its a crappy centrino with windows xp. My house computer is a quad with windows vista 64 4gs memory sli 9600gt you would think the internet would be faster.... Im not sure about downloading but I do know that this DSL is kicking the crap out of timewarner at loading webpages and if it gives me better latency in my games ill be switch over to it because its alot cheaper.

Has anyone else had problems with timewarner and found AT&T was faster? Can anyone explain why the AT&T is loading webpages faster?

Are you sure its dsl? It could be a t1 line and have 1.5 down.

I have Time Warner and it blows. The Comcast service I had back up in Seattle was way faster and more reliable. Maybe the TW cable network I'm on down here in California is overloaded or something. I do notice a lot of speed variation between time and days.

If you can get Verizon FiOS, I hear that's the way to go. If you can't, I'd recommend switching to DSL if you can get it. That way the bandwidth is yours rather than shared with the community.

I have att and it is great. Ive got the pro so it is ABOUT 6mb down, they advertise 6mb. The best thing about it is you can now go to starbucks and log on the tmobile APs and use you att account. Oh and i used to have cable for about four years the reason i switched was att was faster in this area for the money. Also, att uses upload compression i dont know if it is a factor for you but its worth mentioning

I'm not completly sure, but thats what the secretary that pays the bills on it told me when I asked. I thought it was timewarner cable and to my suprise she said it was DSL through AT&T medium speed package.

Down where I live AT&T is the way to go. I have had both TWC cable and AT&T dsl, I get nearly the same if not even better latency to servers than when I had cable. I'm paying for the Elite package which is 6mb down for around $30some odd dollars which I don't remember the exact price for. I didn't notice any drop in speed going from cable to dsl. I always thought that cable was better than dsl but price/speed is a good reason to make the switch. There are days when I do get a little bit of lag, but nothing a modem restart won't fix.

i also have the elite package at my house and at my business speedtests show up as 5.2 down and 650 up max i never get any down time or such rain, shine, sleet, snow, etc. consistent speed all the time with ATT here. The cable company in my area is charter. I had charter when i first moved in but it went down during storms that would be in the local area, like the next town over LOL! So im gonna be with att for a while unless they keep raising their prices.

Lots of stuff can affect how quickly a webpage loads, and overall upload/download speeds in addition to straight bandwidth your company provides--for example, optimizing my MTU on my home computer to match the MTU of the router/gateway gave me double the download bandwidth at home when I first got my service--also, the latencies will affect browsing speeds too.

I've found that for browsing, I don't see much of a difference at home (I also have AT&T DSL, 3.0Mb/s down, 512kb/s up) vs. at school--I believe we have either T1 or T3 lines. I don't know about cable though...

You might want to first check that your MTU on your network device matches that of your router/gateway (and also use the best RWIN setting--might be a trial/error thing). The program I like to use is tweakdun--though all they end up being is registry settings, but I honestly don't like to manually adjust registry settings.
