Ubuntu 8.04 cut battery discharge time in half

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I've been running Xubuntu 7.10 for a while on my laptop and decided to try out the new Ubuntu. I wiped the drive clean and did a fresh install from the live CD. Everything worked great except for the battery, while I normally get around 4 hours battery time on Xubuntu 7.10, I got a little over 2 with Ubuntu 8.04. It isn't a battery monitoring issue, either: I physically waited 2 hours until the laptop shut off and timed it. Powertop reveals nothing out of the ordinary and all power settings are set to maximum power saving.

I've heard that 8.04 screwed up some ACPI management, I'm starting to think that these rumors may have some truth to them. Can anyone provide some insight? I'm using an IBM T42 ThinkPad, by the way.

Hardy has better battery management than previous versions. Thing is that Ubuntu usually has very relaxed power management settings for laptops. You can change them with the Configuration Editor (from the Application menu or run gconf from a terminal).
