E8400 or Q6600 D;

Thread Starter
To start with i'm new to intel, i've just decided to upgrade my AM2 rig,
new motherboard and cpu. Never owned anything intel before so this is a first
what would you guys choose..

E8400 3.0ghz £130
Q6600 2.4ghz £150
or even Q9300 2.5ghz £165

I'm leaning towards the E8400 since it's the cheapest and I don't really see the benefit of the quad in many games, but i'm no expert ;]

I wouldn't go with the Q9300 because of its smaller L2 cache, that hurts its preformance. Aswell as its 7.5x Multi, which isn't great for overclocking.

A Quad isn't bad at all for games, but saying that it wont clock as high as a Dual, or very rarely will.

Get a E8400 or a Q6600 and you won't be disappointed.

less heat from the q9300=higher overclock thanks to the 45nm size

Q9300's don't overclock that well at all because of the low multiplier.

I say Q6600. I've owned both a E8400 and a Q6600 and much prefer the quad.

Unless you have a board that can take a 45nm quad to well over 500MHz FSB, don't bother with the Q9300.

E8400. Unless you're folding, there's no need for a quad really...

<3 my quad.

not another one....

if you want a Quad - Q6600
if you want GHz - E8400

either one will kick arse in games..... if your really looking for sick gaming... SLI or Crossfire is what you should look into..

Thanks for all the replys, so the Q9300 is a no go.
I hate indecision.
I'd like the Q6600 just for the sake of having a quad
Is it fairly easy to get it up to 3.0ghz say with stock voltages?

^^ I'm also thinking about sli when I have more money ;]
Or when the XFX 8800GTS Alpha dog drops a bit more in price
Since i'd like my cards to be matching ;l
