Using SATA HD on an IDE MOBO with SATA ports ?

Hey guys my mom wanted a new hard drive for her computer. Her computer uses IDE for its first HD but it has SATA ports. The second hard drive is SATA, and when i plug it in it shows up in the BIOS of the motherboard.

However when i try to format it from windows , " my computer --> manage --> Disk Management " no drive shows up.

When i try to format by booting from a windows CD it doesn't show up. When i Disable my IDE hard drive and try to format from the windows CD It tells me i don't have any hard drives. When i unplug my IDE hard drive and try to boot from CD and install windows it still says i have no HD.

The hard drive has a windows partition on it. It shows 186 gigs free of 200 gigs in the bios.

I don't know what to do, any ideas?

My guess is that the SATA hard drive is in dynamic mode. Go into Windows XP disk management and set it to a basic disk. You should then be able to install an operationg system on it.

No, the bios shows a setting with serial ATA enabled and the hard drive appears in bios under hard disks list in the boot sections of the bios.
