Best Socket 775 Motherboard?

Thread Starter
Hey there guys...I'm planning on upgrading a few things, mainly my mobo, so I can start using ddr3 memory. I was just wondering what you all suggest as the best of the best out there. I'm trying to keep the price around $200...any help is much appreciated.

Based on the price of DDR3 right now, I would just wait a few months until Nehalem comes out. It will be using a different socket entirely, so if you were upgrading your motherboard to make that switch easier, you'll still have to get a new mobo.

If you are still intent on upgrading now, I think the Maximus formulas do pretty well, and the X38/48 chipsets are ok.

^ He basically took the words right out of my mouth.

But if you really want to upgrade now, and do not want to wait, I really would recommend the ASUS P5E X38 motherboard. It's a really great board and chipset that I'm sure would suit you really well. The maximus formula is also a good board. It's your call.

A different socket? Really? That kinda sucks...I just "half" upgraded already. Bought an E8400 and a TT120. Will my new E8400 not work with the Nehalem architecture? Thanks for the help and the heads up...I had no idea.

It's going to be hard to find a good DDR3 motherboard for $200. Honestly, when SLI/Crossfire isn't considered, you already have one of the best motherboards out there IMO.

Also, just a thought...what do you guys think about the GIGABYTE GA-EP35C-DS3R. It's got both ddr2 and ddr3 slots and it's cheap. Honestly, when I purchased my p35 ds3r, I thought I was purchasing this one. I love my gigabyte now, so maybe that one isn't so bad.

That board is going to be almost nearly identical to the one you already own, with the addition of the ddr3 slots. No, your e8400 will not work with the nehalem subsystems when it comes out. New socket will not fit the current chips as far as I have seen. Right now, AMD is the only company that is making one compatible socket for three gens (AM2, AM2+, AM3 are all supposed to use the same socket.) Good luck in your quest, but I would seriously just wait until nehalem comes out. By that time, ddr3 should be cheaper, so you'll be saving money all around for that upgrade, if that is your intention.

I don't think you should wait for the nehalem, unless you're getting the Bloomfield (aka "very expensive"), which will come out later this year.
The LGA 1160 won't see the market until Q1-2 2009.
