Conexant Systems has toiled into the night for countless days but it can now finally brag with having the first speakers-on-a-chip (SPoC) solutions. The CX20562 family of chips are aimed at products supporting high-definition audio and voice applications and basically offers key speaker technologies and processing functionality in one small package.

"The increased availability of downloadable music and entertainment, and growing popularity of VoIP for business and personal communications, has sparked demand from consumers for higher quality, cost-effective audio," said Will Strauss, president of market research firm Forward Concepts. "Conexant’s new speakers-on-a-chip family provides the foundation for more cost-effective VoIP full-duplex speakerphones, and also enables PCs to support high-quality audio entertainment and Skype communication speakerphone capabilities."

The single-chip CX20562 integrates the functionality of a digital audio/voice processor, audio codec, and Class-D amplifier and provides things like advanced sound processing, echo-cancellation, and noise-reduction technology. The chip also boasts a USB interface, an auxiliary analog input, has support basic audio interfaces including auxiliary input, headphone jack, internal microphone input, digital/analog volume control, speaker mute, and microphone mute, plus, depending on the chip version, support for an additional 20-key keypad and an LCD display controller interface.

The CX20562 is already available and priced at $2.00 to $3.75 each in 10K volume quantities, depending on the feature set (which you can see below).

Haven't you ever heard of a 'Computer on a Chip' as a phrase used to mean having everything integrated into a single chip (you know, kind of like how it IS DONE, EH?). I would seriously suggest you take some time to read through the article as I thought it was plainly obvious in what they were referencing.

Back on topic, though, that's a RATHER small chip to have all of those functions. I'd love to see how well it preforms. Here's hoping that we can have it and eat it, too!

I know what a computer on a chip is and I read the article and know whats in this chip and I think it's ridiculous to call it a speaker on a chip when there are no speakers on it, lol. It's a complete soundcard on a chip, it is cool, but it is not a SPEAKER on a chip, thats retarded.
