Is the Thermalright thermal grease good enough?

I was wondering because the dude at this store when i was buying all my computer parts a month ago said that thermal grease is thermal grease.. do you think ill get dramatic changes if i had like Arctic silver 2 or whatever instead of the Thermalright thermal grease??

The difference form stock TIMs to Aftermarket ones can be staggering, but between the aftermarket ones, there's a 5 degree difference at most. The thermalright grease might do oyu good until you hit about 3.4ghz.

I tried both Arctic Silver 5 and the Thermalright compound that came with my HR-03 Plus (on my 8800GTX). I couldn't really tell a difference between the two. The temps were practically identical.

EDIT: Here is a recent review done by HardwareLogic that compares a variety of thermal compounds.

Ditto what Betrivent said. If you're looking for the BEST, then Arctic Silver 5 or equivalent. To me, it's worth the money. But the salesman was right to some extent. And Thermalright includes a crapload of TIM with each heatsink. I have 3 large tunes I'm not using. Higher overclocks you'll notice some difference, but overall, you won't hurt anything by not going "premium". You can get a small syringe of AS5 which would last you quite a while from newegg for like $5.99, and the large one for like $17.65. I'm probably going to buy a large one soon. Once again, it's preference. Just read a bunch of the threads where people posted their personal experiences by switching to the name brands. But the real test is by you with your own equipment. I would recommend installing with what you already have, and if you are still unsatisfied with your temps, then purchase something better.

Hey Duk, I use AS5 for the cpus and arctic ceramique for mosfets, gpus, and NB/SBs. Difference is that AS5 has a slight electrical capacitance. Most greases are same unless its screamin like a demon.

I think that more important than which thermal interface material (TIM) you use is whether or not you use the right technique in applying what you do use. Not all TIMs are equal in this respect; there is definitely a right way and a wrong way to apply each and every TIM.

The point is, it would be helpful to experiment with application techniques until you find the optimum way of applying the TIM you do have. This advice isn't terribly specific, perhaps, but as a generalization it's a good rule of thumb.

I would go with AS5 though the feedback from friends is that the TR thermal grease is not bad at all!
