crappy E8400?

E8400 Lockup's @ 400 fsb

I bought a new computer this month, and as soon as i had vista installed, i went into bios, set the FSB to 400, upped the vcore to 1.2750 in bios, and set my dram voltage to what corsair told me to. (1.8)

The computer was no stable in orthos, so i tried memtest, memtest gave errors on 2 sticks, so i rma'ed them.

Then running on 2GB ram, like i do now.. orthos was stable.

But.. all my games freeze and lockup.. After 1-5 mins. And i have to hit the reset button on my case.

I've tried to figure this one out for many days now and yesterday i went back into bios, and i set the vcore down to 1.2, and fsb back to 333. And everything works perfectly.

(I've tried playing with 400fsb and vcore increase with .25 up to 1.3750. No changes. I also tried with NB 1.49/1.47/1.45 and FSB termination voltage 1.22 /1.24/1.26) All settings tried with strap 400 and 333.

My temps are good, i feel that it should run on 400x9. 400x8 gives the same results.

Im totally lost.

Is my cpu really crappy?

Based on what you tell us here, I think the RAM is the culprit. This doesn't seem to be a CPU issue.

At what speed do you have the RAM running? You indeed might need more than 1.8V for the RAM, since you overclock it (the RMA probably was useless... since you ran overclocked RAM at stock voltage)

Thx for your reply

But the Ram divider is stuck on 2:1 with DDR3.. So when i run 333 i can only have DDR 1333.

When i set fsb to 400, then i can have what my ram can run on.. DDR1600.

My ram is 1600mhz on stock 1.8V..

And when i use 400fsb i've only overclocked the cpu, not the ram.

Now that everything is good, (333 fsb) i use the ram on 1333 mhz..
