MP3 Players and Audio Formats (FLAC, MP3, OGG)

Thread Starter
I was wondering about the difference between:
-converting my music to FLAC and then MP3 LAME to use on my MP3 Player
or
-converting the music straight to MP3 LAME to use on both.

My main question is the difference between FLAC and MP3 LAME (V0) in terms of quality.

Thanks!

Converting what to what?

By converting you mean rip from the CD?
You cant get better sound quality by converting lossy to lossless format.

EDIT: Did that make sense? If not, ignore me, lol

afaik
FLAC = lossless
MP3 LAME = lossy

So if the files are ultimately going to be mp3 (ie, lossy) Just rip the music straight to VRB MP3 (imho... I think, lol)

Sorry, that was worded weird...

Yes, I am ripping them from CDs.

Basically, I was wondering if I would notice a difference listening to FLAC or MP3 LAME V0 on my computer and if it is worth the extra space.

I would have MP3 on my player in both situations, but was wondering if FLAC for listening on my computer and MP3 on my player was worth the extra space on my hard drive.

Depends on the quality of:-

Your soundcard / amp
Your speakers or headphones
Your hearing

Soundcard in sig.
I'm guessing it's not worth it for FLAC.

I have a lot of music in FLAC (Magnatune FTW). I don't know if it really makes a huge difference, it does eat up disk space though.

I like to store music in open formats on my PC, and as converting from OGG to MP3 for my MP3 player would be lossy to lossy and ensure degradation, it makes sense to use FLAC, in a sense.

Flac Makes a massive difference..

Even on the extreme gamer sound card.

Seriously the better quality ure source gets and ure speakers/headphones you see the difference.

Really hard drives are cheap these days why are you worrying about space lol

Anyone that cant tell the difference between MP3 and a Loseless codec should through their speakers/headphones away

I cant even listen to MP3s anymore cause the quality is so bad. And good headphones will show how bad it is.

Then you listen to a Loseless Code (FLAC) and its like wow!!!

The best way is to have a IPOD and use their loseless codec. (ALE - Apples Loseless Encoder)

So you can get a loseless format on ure ipod.

First I need to get a bigger iPod...I only have a 1GB now.. /cry

I was thinking about going with something other than an iPod so I don't have to deal with iTunes...Anybody know a player that is fairly big (16GB+) that supports FLAC?

EDIT: Rep+ to all that helped
