After reading plenty of threads on various forums it seems to me that any high-pitched squeal from any hardware in your PC means it's under heavy stress...

Stress that can be caused by too much overclock, too much voltage or even too little voltage.

Seeing how that noise was occuring at stock settings on a brand new PSU, i'm thinking that the PSU is probably faulty and not delivering enough power.

I've had that noise come from the CPU and video card when I overclocked them and ran benchmarks/stress tests.

Funny thing is that I ran Crysis without any problems! The squeal was present during the loadup and intro video but once in game, the squeal was gone. (Crysis looks amazing btw - all high settings and A.A. on 4x or 6x I think)

I'm pretty sure that the stress is going to lower the lifespan of the hardware (I don't know by how much) and your best bet is to try and figure out what the issue is even if your PC is performing normally performance-wise.

Thus, i've ordered a new GTX 260 and a new PSU (next model up with 800w instead of 700w)

We'll see..

Check to make sure you have an adequate power supply for your video card and it's plugged in pretty tight. The high pitched sound is usually do to not enough power.

I was reading through a review and it said that you have to have a PCI-E 2.0 mobo to run a GTX200 card, true?

800W is enough I think for my system.

I'm pretty sure the tightness isn't that much of a problem as when I first installed the system in Feb/March it had the problem although at the time I thought it was normal and since then I have reinstalled everything again with same results

hey guys.. reran 3Dmark Vantage with new drivers... 177.79 rather than the WHQL 41's...

i strongly reccomend these drivers to GTX 280/260 owners..

I found that in 3Dmark... in places where it would choke abit.. it glides effortlessly like the rest of the time..

performance preset

13498

GPU 11242 CPU 33915

compared to my previous of

12966

GPU: 10769 CPU: 33406

Not only did it increase GPU performance.. but also increased CPU performance.. meaning nvidia have refined the onboard Physics computation also

Have ago fellas

Wow, that's great that the new drivers are so much better. I look forward to trying them this weekend. Incidentally, they are officially posted to Nvidia's beta download section so there's no need to go to Guru3D like we did for 177.66.
