Why is my old Dell 2.6 P4 blowing my brand new HP Athlon DualCore AMD Athlon 64 X2 3.

Why is my old Dell 2.6 P4 blowing my brand new HP Athlon DualCore AMD Athlon 64 X2 3.0 Away?
I am so disgusted with this HP amd6000 machine's performance that I am ready to give it to the garbage man. :sniff:
I bought this HP machine last week while thinking that it should easily pull twice the CPU load then what my 5 year old Dell can. I thought it would be able to easily run at least 4 instances of my game and transcode a movie with no hangs. My old Dell can run 3 game instances and transcode a movie but that is it's limit.
Sheeze, on this HP when I run 4 game instances both CPU's ride at 95-100% plus I have to manually set the affinity to balance the load.
The Dell ran 4 instances of the game and it's CPU load hovered at 60% CPU usage and the load was always balanced between the real and virtual core.
Everything checks out fine with new HP under EveRest, Speedfan and CPU-z. Every component is indeed authentic.
My Dell is now gutted out and it's HDs are all now crammed in the HP's case. It will be a big bite if I have to bring the Dell back up for a direct comparasions analysis.
What I do know now is that my Dell can run circles around the HP while pulling a double load. BUT that shouldn't be possible or is it?
Maybe Vista is fighting against the game. Or the game just doesn't agree with the HP....
The game is the only Cpu intensive app in my recent memory I have to go by on the CPU pull on both machines.
To eliminate the OS difference between the 2 machines I installed XP on the HP to see if there was any with the game running that way.
Well that was a no go there, XP lacks the ethernet driver for the HP, meaning I can't go online via XP to get the game started(it's an online play only).
The driver I need is for nForce but it comes in many flavors and all the readings I can get tell me only nVidia nForce none state the component/version #'s.
The game itself is not a very intensive one in any way http://top.igg.com/main.php although running multiple instances has I do will take a toll.
Vista itself idles at 0%-6% CPU use.
I can get Vista down to about 40 running processes and the games still tug the same on the CPU.
I have no access to any machine comparable to this HP. I have never played on any dual core system before.
Shouldn't this HP make my old Dell feel like an old 98 machine? Or am I just dreamimg?

I think we need a bit more info. Like specific components. And the stuff you put in the system specs is meaningless--just empty fields.

Ain't no way a 2.6GHz P4 is keeping up with an X2 @ 3GHz. What are the specifications of the new HP?

Could be a lot of stuff--not enough RAM (can be an issue with Vista), Vista's processes bogging down the system (which is likely if you're just beginning to use the system--superfetch will run often/all the time--it did on mine). HDD speed (this will be the biggest issue if superfetch is indeed running, which is probably the issue).

I say disable superfetch and see how that helps.

That's what I thought that the new HP should easily handle double the game instances. Instead it's CPU is being hit twice has hard with half the load that the Dell took.

Specs for HP is at the of my bottom post now.

The HP has 3gigs of ram. Ever since I have had this system up 2gigs of ram are always in use with 1gig free. Firing up another game instance and fully loading it just now only made the ram use jump by .08 and soared the CPU to 75%.

To get Vista down to 40 runnng processes SuperFetch and the SearchIndex are always the first to go

It's a good thought to remember that being a possibity thou.

I have only installed a few basic apps so far including ZAPS(ZoneAlarm Suite) being the biggest one. Plus all of MS updates. Vista's SP1 made no impact on games CPU use. I have tried running the game with and without compatability mode and that makes no difference too. The game's maker only says not to install the game on the same disk which Vista resides on and that it works on Vista. I installed the games while on the Dell and on it's drive which is now my 3rd drive in the HP. All HD's Smart status check out fine except 1 is a bit full and it's not the system drive nor the game's drive.
The system scans clean with ZAPS and Defender. I always shut down AV & Spyware scanners when I'm not DLing or Surfing to ease file access times while pulling heavy CPU loads.
The game itself plays and looks fine, every instance of it. I have turned off all extra graphic features in all but 1 instance. Still I can only run 2 instances on this HP in order to keep both cores under 60% use otherwise the fans really kick in and the temps really jump.

Yeah, I see the spec's now--sorry! Hmm...I'm still puzzled, and it seems like you have quite a good grasp of what's going on--not a noob. Hmm...

did you check to make sure the CPU really is running at 3GHz? I know you said you analyzed the system with everest, so I'm sure that would have been an obvious thing.

You could do this--download/save your ethernet drivers when in Vista, then install XP, and now that you have your drivers, you can use XP and see if that gives you similar performance.

Also try disabling superfetch and see if that clears things up.

Man, I'm running out of ideas. Wish someone else would respond...

Hmm, like you stated the P4 dell should be no where near that X2 6000.
Do you have cool & quite enabled?
Also make sure you installed the dual core optimizer, thats a must for any dual core amd cpu.

Yeah, don't forget the dual-core optimizer from the AMD site--good point. I wonder if that would be on the HP's driver disk, which likely would be preinstalled? Well, I guess not necessarily. Try that too! Good point!

x15.

Your ram is on a divider, thats cutting your memory bandwidth down. Try lowering it and raising your fsb to compensate....

Faulty memory perhaps. Run MemTest86+ and see if it produces errors. If it does then I would just try running MemTest86+ with one stick at a time until you find the bad stick(s). If that is not the case then maybe a reformat and fresh install of Windows may help things out. What card were you running in your Dell? That Radeon HD 2600 is less then an ideal card.
