S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky is the follow-up game to 2007’s PC hit S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl. Clear Sky (as what it’ll be referred to as, due its overdose on punctuation) is a prequel boasting a mixture of new areas as well as ‘remade’ levels. There’s a ‘1.5 update’ to the game’s X-Ray Engine which promises to bring in the latest DirectX 10 effects and much needed stabilisation. The game’s due the end of August and hopes to continue the unique blend of FPS and RPG gameplay that made the original such a joy to experience. We’ve been lucky enough to get hands on with the game to see how it’s getting on. If you’re only interested in how it looks, scroll down for the eye candy.

Anyone expecting an overhaul will be bitterly disappointed. The build we were treated to is stamped with a ‘work in progress’ watermark which obviously explains the lack of ‘wow’ factor (concerning the graphics), but we’re expecting the gameplay mechanics to stay the same (minus the obvious tweaking and balancing) up to the game’s release. The game plays exactly the same as Shadow of Chernobyl. The gunplay is still unique, in such a way that spraying bullets will result in death. Close range, single-shot pistol rounds to the head do their job and it’s the most effective way of clearing a sector. Automatic weapons are still notoriously shoddy at long range so expect controlled shooting to be on the menu.

Once alerted to your presence (which doesn’t take too long once you’ve started to drop bad guys) the AI kicks in and attempts to hunt you down. You’ve got a sound and visibility meter, so if those are kept to a minimum you can slowly pick off enemies one by one. If you lack the subtle approach you’ll quickly be surrounded and dropped to the floor by a hail of bullets. We couldn’t see much difference from the original game, in both human and animal AI, but that ‘WIP’ watermark kept rearing its head. If you liked the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R, then we can firmly say that you’ll like Clear Sky.

STALKER was a great idea with poor execution. The AI were omniscient once you fire a shot (which the article seems to indicate they fixed) and the guns you had to work with for ~90% of the game were horrible. I understand that RPG's start you off with crappy weapons and you have to work your way up, but for the vast majority of the game there is absolutely no way to hit somebody who is more than 15 feet away. Even single shots while prone are horribly inaccurate. This one it seems they left intact so I don't know if I'll try the sequel. Call it what you will, but there's no reason to make a game painful in the ways that STALKER was

I had no problems at all with the rifles at shooting long range. Switch to single shot mode and then either using iron sights or a scope it is easy to pick off guys. I spent most of the time completly using single shot mode as once you start spraying on auto mode although you killed the guy you wasted a hell of a lot of ammo.

It didnt take me long to become proficient at it and once you find a scope to attach to the gun makes it even easier. The guns and the shooting was really refreshing in stalker since it wasnt as easy as point, click, dead. You actually had to aim and get used to the inaccuracy of the gun.

Problem was how damned long it took to get a rifle. The last stretch was fun but the rest sucked

If it took you that long to get a rifle to replace the pistol then that's your own fault and not the game's. It didn't take long to get better weapons and ammo. Hell, at the train crossing in the first zone you just had to melee one of the soldiers and steal his rifle. Voila. Sounds to me like you are bitter because you found the game too difficult.

Either that, or you sucked. I didn't have any problem in getting a rifle quickly or shooting long distance. But, then again, I can take a chimp to town on a math exam, so maybe we shouldn't be talking about me.

When I played it took a very long time relative to the length of the game to get a gun that was accurate over mid to long range - even single shots crouched. If your experiences differed maybe you were playing an easier difficulty level, all I can speak for is what I experienced

There were some problems regarding long range aiming. But, STALKER has to be one of the easiest and largest games to mod other then CSS that Ive ever encountered. There are many many ways of DO-IT-YOURSELF fixes to most of the problems in STALKER like the long range.
