Molex connector question

Thread Starter
I went to Fry's yesterday and picked up the only 775 board that I could find on clearance. They had 2 Abit IL9 Pro for $15 each. I assumed that I can throw in my E6600 that I'm not using and can't sell because I don't have enough reps. Well after reading it turns out that you can't o/c this board which is very disappointing. I planned on playing with it for a while then giving it to my dad. Even a little o/c would have been nice but I can't even do that. If I can come up on a dirt cheap card and ram I'll probably just give it to my dad, if not I'll return it.

So back to the question, right above the first PCI-E slot there is a 4pin molex connector. Do I have to connector power to it, or is this optional if I cross-fire? I have never had a board with one of these and the instructions says it provides auxiliary power for devices connected to the PCI-E slots. Its not really clear if I need to or not.

You are correct that it is there for if you run crossfire. It supplies extra voltage to the pci-e slots.

I had an ECS board like that a little while back on a backup system. From what I could tell, it needed the connector 90% of the time as the PCIE slots were not very well powered themselves. For real simple cards like an 8300 or so it's probably not needed, but for say an 8800GT, it will need both the connector on the card plus the molex.

If you have a spare molex power connector in your system, plug it in and use it.

Thanks guys, Once I get a cheap video card and some ram and get this thing running I'll try it with and with out the molex connector. I'm sure the video card I buy is going to be a POS and won't need much juice.

First of all, the Abit IL9 Pro does NOT provide SLI or Crossfire support. It is based on the Intel P945 Chipset. You can have two video card for multi-monitor support, but you can't crossfire.

The molex connector is just an extra connector that you can connect anything to. I have one also on my Abit IP35-pro that I currently have two case fans, my X-fi Elite pro connected to.

So it is not just for video card.

P.S. DO NOT CONNECT A MOLEX CABLE FROM PSU TO THAT CONNECTOR. The connector itself is powered by the Motherboard and it is AUX power source.
