Extensive cooling Investigation - needs advice, discussion, help.

Hey everyone, I'm Icarus, a high school junior, living in Hong Kong.
in school we have to do an extended essay a topic on your choice with aspecific subject linkage. I chose physics and i decided to do the essay on cooling (probably air) inside a default atx case. there are debates going on to see whether the placement of the fans are distinctly important with the effectiveness of the airflow. i am determined to find out. i have asked the school to supply an old desktop for the experiment. In the thread i am asking for advice, technical support, possibly helping me get equiptment and even just plain discussion. i would really appreciate some help or reply

Welcome!

Debates..yes there are....

Don't use BIOS readings for temperatures. The computer is not at full load when in the BIOS and I would think you would want to measure temperatures under a full load. OCCT or Orthos will stress your CPU.

Are you going to measure both air temperatures and CPU temperatures?

hey, thank you for the quick reply, i'm going to put them up on occt while measuring the temperature of the CPU GPU and maybe the northbridge? is "core temp" reliable at measuring the temperature. Its the software that i'm using right now for it.. how does the software measure the temperature of the cpu anyway. i might need to explain how int he essay. I can get a hold of some really excellent thermocouples to measure the air temperature in different parts of the case. I might
get
a hold a smoke machine to see that actual air flow in the rig, the rig doesn't really matter as long as its controlled, i still haven't figured out the independent and dependent variables. btw its really nice to meet you, i'm really kinda new with overclock.net
.

Coretemp is an excellent utility for measuring temps. only other thing I could suggest is maybe buying Everest Ultimate. It'll Do NB, SB, and CPU temps. It also detects voltages, which you definitely want to keep fixed.

...small world.

I lived at the C.U.H.K., one if the schools I attended was H.K.I.S. when it was all in Repulse Bay.

I would be more than happy to assist you in any way that I can.

It would be interesting to hear the debate-points of those individuals that feel that fan-placement does not effect cooling potential... not a challenge, merely inquisitive.

My experience is tha uni-directional air-flow with nominally balanced air-pressure yields the most efficient cooling potential.

Independant variable: Fan Speed
Dependent variable: Noise

You would need a decibel-mesuring thingy, though.

Or you could do:

Independant variable: Fan Speed
Dependent variable: CPU temperature at load

Coretemp(and all other temp monitoring programs for that matter) read a voltage from the CPU. That voltage is proportional to the temperature (Tcasemax) of the CPU. Intel has not publicly revealed exactly what this proportionality is, so for Intel CPU's Coretemp is just a guess. With AMD the situation is a little different. AMD CPUs will shut down at a specific temperature and the Coretemp software can be calibrated to this temperature, since two points (ambient temperature and shut down temperature) on the calibration curve are known. Intel CPUs do not shut down, they "throttle" (ie. run slower) at a specific temperature (I suspect this throttling temperature is different for each particular CPU..others may correct me if that's incorrect) so two points can not be determined, and accurate calibration of the Tcasemax voltage proportionality can not be done.

Thermocouples will serve you well. But in a case with proper airflow there will be no dead spots.

I don't think a smoke generator will work, the air flow is to turbulent.

Happy hunting!

Sounds really cool, you guys are really helpful. I'm in search of some equipment for the experiment, i'm not sure if i can get a hold of the school computer. i might need well done atx case. do u think u guys can help, any second hand stuff i could borrow. also i'm not going to do noise and fan speed i'm going to strictly stick with temp and cooling. coretemp will measure the cpus temp, and multiple thermocouples for the other parts of the case, in addition, instead of a smoke machine, maybe incense sticks. do you know if there is any way that i could get a hold of a thermal camera to see the waves of hot and cold air? again thanks for all the advice. i plan to start the experiment straight after my exams, in about 2 weeks. it would be really cool to put another debate to rest.
