trying to choose a psu

Thread Starter
need a replacement psu for my system after my x2 550w died. i'm on a very low budget, cuz ordering a power supply will usually run me into the equivalent value(or more) in shipping costs.

that said i'm looking at the ultra x3 600w and the silverstone strider 600w. i know the x3 is not on johnnyguru's recommended list but a friend of mine is currently using one with pretty good results. and while the strider is on the list, i'm seeing quite a few negative reviews on the egg

if there are any others u would recommend for my setup, i would appreciate the advice. note however that i'm not looking to go over US$200, and i would prefer a modular psu

I SWEAR by Silverstone. I have a Decathlon, but I want a Strider. EXCELLENT PSU's!!!

I swear by Antec. I love these PSUs, very reliable.

for your sig rig. a Corsair HSX520 is enough. Very high quality PSU. Or you can get its bigger brother HX630. Both are Modular. The HX520 is usually under 100 dollars and HX620 is around 120 to 130 or so.

You can check Buy.com, Newegg...

btw..just ordered a Corsair TX750 from Buy.com for under 100 bucks..but it is not modular.

thx for the suggestion

side note 1: buying from newegg is out of the question. they don't ship here. right now the options that i have (that i know about and have used) are tigerdirect, amazon and Performance PCs. I will check them for that psu tho.

side note 2: i am looking to upgrade this summer to a x2 5000+ BE with Zalman 9500 AM2 cooler. Slight overclocking will be considered as well so that may also have an impact on my purchase

overclocking or not, unless you go sli some 9800gx2s or crossfire a couple 3870x2, just about anything else the Corsair 620HX(modular) can run it just fine, even a couple 8800gts and a quad are no problem

For the current system a good 400 wwill power it fine even with extreme OC's BUt you might want to get 500w+ such as the Corsair 5500VX or if you plan on Sli then TX750

of the silverston line up the decathlon and the olympia series are the best. the strider is the lowest of the bunch. you should be happy with the DA.

i second the Corsair HX520. it can be had occasionally for $60 at buy.com. not sure what the price is now though. i had an HX520 and it was rock solid and never failed me once. best psu for the price

Your decathlon is better than the strider... the strider is actually the weakest line of PSUs in their entire line-up.

I would seriously reconsider modular. The sole benefit is better cable management (but in any half decent case you should be able to hide excess cables anyways). If you don't go modular, the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610W is very nice:

I was confused there for a second, you said you were on a very low budget but then you said up $200. That is more then enough to buy a nice psu . I'd get either the Silencer Chozart just listed or the Corsair tx650. Those psus are pretty much the same thing but you don't need a rebate so I would be inclined to go with the Silencer. It sucks you can't use other stores, we could save you another $30-40 or so .

Just looked on Amazon and you can save a few bucks on the silencer.
