Vista,Toshiba laptop,hangs on splash screen

I currently have a toshiba laptop that i have been asked to fix.

The problem is that the person wants me to either fix the problem or get it to a state where i can recover the data off the laptop.

When the laptop is switched on it gets past the bios screen and haves a black screen for a while then comes up with the error of "the windows boot configuration file is missing required information"
file:/boot/bcd

the Microsoft help and support said to put in an official Vista disk and then go to repair my computer. tried this numerous time but keeps hanging on the splash screen. I press a button to start reading from the disk then gets to a screens that asks me what i want to fix or go to advanced options. i click the windows installation i want and it goes to the splash screen and sits there til i restart or turn the laptop off.

I have also tried booting the laptop from using a portable windows on a USB drive that definitely works on other laptops and same thing happens. i have also tried using a bootable windows vista live disk and this also hangs on the splash screen.

i am stuck, any chance anyone can help.

thanks in advance

If Windows is corrupted and you can't get into the recovery console, consider removing the hard drive, placing it in an enclosure, and attaching it to another computer to retrieve the data. By my understanding, most of that data should be just fine, but that hard drive won't be bootable until you get a fresh copy of Windows on there.

I work in a computer store and while I'm only part-time, you won't believe the stories I've heard about Toshiba customer service. If you do decide to ship it back to them, it will be 2 weeks if you are lucky and call to inquire on it (beyond that initial csr, mind you), but more likely it will be a month. If it comes back working, consider yourself lucky. Send it to Toshiba as a last resort. Trust me on that one.

Thanks for the reply mate, i had a feeling that this was going to be the conclusion to be honest. i was just rather hoping that it was going to be a little easier.

The jobs i take on for other people never seem to have the simple fix.lol. thats ok though the bigger the problem the more money i can charge for the fix.

I have now placed the laptop hard drive in my desktop PC as secondry SATA. Now when i go into Bios it says the toshiba drive is there so i put it down a few places on hard drive priority. restart the computer and now my Vista Ultimate hangs on the splash screen same as when in the laptop but is running a different operating system.

I then restarted the computer and kept the power lead in the laptop drive and not the connection to MOBO, when windows started i connected the drive again(risky i know) but now the drive is coming up in device manager but not in my computer. cant access files.

any help would be appreciated.
thanks in advance
