buying a hardware raid

I’ve been using raid-0 (off the mobo) for the last few years, i like it but i want to take it a step further. I do a lot of HD video along with editing as a hobby and unfortunately I’m a student as well. Sufficed to say, I’m pore and i need storage space. I sat down yesterday realizing that if one of my 2 hard drives died I would really, really be sad. Years of work in the trash!

I’m looking to build a raid around 1TB of actual storage which starts getting expensive in raid1. Rather then losing 50% of physical memory due to raid1, I have been considering doing a raid5. the software raid5 reviews I’ve been reading don’t sound too stable. What’s the best way to go about doing this? And last, what about upgrading space down the road? I’m feeling a little lost at this point...

For CRITICAL data, I would ALWAYS have a single hard drive as a back-up, EVEN if you run a data-redundant RAID. The moment you switch RAID controller, the RAID array won't be recognized and you'll have the rebuild the array, resulting in data loss.

A hardware RAID controller card is likely out of your budget, since anything decent that will run RAID5 satisfactorily costs upward of $200 for the card alone.

I'd basically set up a 'poor man's' RAID5. Get a pair of 320GB drives in RAID0 and a single 640GB drive. Set it up that you run a nightly automated back up from the RAID0 to the single drive. That way, you have complete data redundancy (worst case: you loose the work of one day) without the expense and trouble to set up a RAID5 array. Plus, you don't loose the entire 640GB drive, since you can use the space not used by the back up for something else

Thats similar to what I have. I have 2x320GB for main usage and then have 2x250GB for backups. It works great. As long as you dont mind buying the extra drives. Also, 1TB drives are not worth the money. 750GB are a lot cheaper and only loose a little space. 1TB is actually 932GB.
