Q6600 GO and P5E3 Deluxe problem

I just completed this build and for the most part its running great. I am having a couple issues.

1. The multiplier keeps dropping to x6 and seems randomly to jump to x9. I have tried to disable any auto overclocking features and manually set everything directly in the bios. I am not sure if its some energy saving feature thats keeping it downclocked but I can't find any way to disable it. If anyone has experinced this with any of the Asus X38 boards and knows hjow to relove it I would be extremely grateful. The ram works fine and the adjustments stay fixed as do all other settings. I am using bios 1203 which is a very recent release.

2.
The other issue is trying to see what amount of cache my hard drive is using. I don't know what program I can use to verify this. There was a firmware update for my drive (Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500gb 32mb). My particular drive had an issue where it was only using 8mb of cache due to shipping with wrong firmware.

3. This my first quad core system and I want to find a good program to test for stability. I am familiar with prime95 and OCCT but is there one that natively benches all four cores?

4. I want to transfer apps/movie/pictures/mp3's from my other system,. Can I just hook the drive up temporarily to this board even though it has boot partitions? I figure if I disable it from the boot sequence it should just show up in MS explorer and then I can drag and drop stuff; will this work?

I love this new rig and am enjoying breaking it in. The bios options are kinda overwhelming but I am mucking through ok. Its a hell of a jump from my 939 Opteron builds that have served me so well and to be honest this new system is fast but it doesn't feel like the huge performance jump from my dual core Opty' http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=163897
s.

This system is going to be mainly used for multimedia (kinda a HTPC setup) as my monitor supports 1080p HD capabilty, video encoding, and dvd/audio cd ripping. I am still tranfering files from my other rig but its easier to play with thanx to the fresh XP pro install.

I know this is a tall order for help but this forum hasn't let me down yet and I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to make everything work fadt and stable. Rep+ to all who assist.

1) Should be a setting in the BIOS, Speedstep, C1E, or EIST..disable.
2) Bench your HDD with HDTach
3) Prime95 version 25.6 supports quads.
4) Should not be a problem

http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=364405 That fixed the muulti problem It was C1E. Once I disabled that it stays at 3ghz. What is C1E fucntion? Saw someting about Vanderholt in the bios. Thank you for the help.

C1E is just a power saving feature. It drops the multi when CPU isn't being used much, but it would kick back up to 9X under a load. Most people here just disable it.

Edit: If you don't think you're getting much of a performance jump with this system, run 3Dmark06. I bet you'll double your score.

Going to do that in a bit. So you think it would be better if I leave it on? I like being able to overclock but to be practical it seems more energy efficient if the PC does downclock and even at 2ghz I really don't see a difference in light loading apps. Going to prime it tonight.

Update: Used Everest Ultimate to verify 32mb buffer on the harddrive and all is well; firmware update did the trick. Installed my hardrive from my Asus A8R32mvp and copy/pasted all my media and apps. I originally just bought the drive for an enclosure backup but I kept wanting to upgrade my old rig and thought money was better spent on a new rig.

After getting the Q6600 for $199 at Microcenter things just took off but at a slow pace. Originally I had gotten a P5E3 deluxe but I sent it back because I thought the X48s were coming out soon but you all know how long it really took. While the P5E3 Premium had good reviews I decided to stick with the Deluxe as it has had longer bios development. Kinda funny I bought the same board again. Whats not funny is the price I paid then is the same. I thought the X48s were supposed to help lower X38s pricing.

I was interested in the X38/X48 boards and I loved all the extras the P5E3 deluxe has (love the wireless access point). The wireless draft/n card saves me from having to daisy chain routers as I am stuck with the Vonage router and the wireless Vonage version was $100 bucks, so it made sense to put that toward the board. This board has been very easy to adjust and never once have I had to clear the cmos because of a fudged overclock.

This rig will hold me till Nehalem and Bulldozer appear and for what I use it for it was worth every penny. Sorry to sort of blog this thread but I am just thrilled with how this build turned out.

I have a question. Would it be better to run a higher FSB and low multi or low FSB to high multi? Which would offer better performance? Also if anyone can point out a good Core 2 Quad overclocking guide I qwoulb be gratefull.
