Vista x64 Ultimate safe with BFG 9800 GX2?

Thread Starter
Currently I am running Vista 32bit because I was having problems with my 7600GT locking up because of the nvlddkm driver or whatever it is called. I just installed my 9800 GX2 and the problems happens atleast once a day. The driver will stop responding, restart, and it will work fine.

My question is, is it safe to upgrade to the x64 version or will I be safer keeping my configuration as is? The only thing holding me back from installing x64 is the driver issue. I have scanned around but a lot of information on this problem seems to be out of date.

Yeah I had it initially with my 7600gt. But after formatting and reinstalling I took out the sli ram 2GB sticks and replaced it with my old corsair RAM. I am going to do it today after work! Then my system will be ready for some overclocking fun! Ill have to post some pics for everyone, it is a nice looking system.

I'd run CCleaner or Driver Cleaner & install the latest forceware drivers. Seems your having issues with the driver, hasn't really got anything to with the OS.

Right now the only difference is the os is 32 bit and not 64, but that will be changed today. Just wanted to double check before I reinstalled x64. Should I have my setup changed until then?

Nah.. I was just wondering.... You deff want 64 bit OS, 8 gb of ram and 32 bit is pointless...

As for Vista 64, I am very happy with it. I have only run into a few program incompatibility issues, but generally can find a compatible program to do the same thing... Mostly vid/audio editing software..

running latest official nvidia drivers with SLI set up with no issues there..

I'm running Vista64 and I've had very few issues compared to some of the horror stories I've heard. Had some slight stability issues at first while overclocking and using the Aero desktop for some reason, but I stripped out my Q6600, lapped the heatspreader on it and the point of contact on the heatsink, and all is pretty much fine now.

The only issue I'm having at present is running a 9800GX2 under Vista64. The drivers can be a bit tempremental at times (I've tried the drivers from the CD that came with the card (173.67), drivers from ASUS (175.12) and three sets of drivers from Nvidia, 173.67, 174.74 and 175.16) and I get some slight display issues at times.

At first I thought it was overclocking issues, as I've also tweaked my ram up from 1333 to 1600MHz, but resetting them along with the processor to stock has no effect on it.

Bizarrely enough the problem only really rears it's head when I try to run Crysis, it won't load and just blackscreens on startup (i've visited several forums and tried about 8 different ways of fixing it, none of which work). There are literally thousands of people who have the same issue, some machines there's a few ways of getting around it by messing around with the task manager.

All in all Vista64 is a very stable OS. It's a lot smoother than XP64 and there's a hell of a lot more support and driver availabilty. I'm actually quite shocked at how well it's supported given the stories I heard at the back end of last year.

If you're looking to run 8GB of ram and a high end card, you can't go wrong with it really. There's a few minor problems but I'm sure they'll clear up in the coming months with more driver revisions.

Hope this helps.

Indeed it did. I went ahead and reinstalled 64 and put my RAM back in and everything is running like a charm. I didnt have a whole lot of time to test everything but I ran COD4 for a solid hour with no problems. Looks like everything will be good, for now that is :X
