Thinking about putting a window in my side panel

Thread Starter
Few questions:
  • What's better for the cutting: dremel or jigsaw?
I want the edges to be as smooth as possible, because I don't want to use rubber trim. Just edge of sidepanel with the acrylic right behind it.
  • Is it possible to sand the cut edges to make them as smooth as possible?
  • If i don't want to use double-sided tape, what bolt-method works best?

Thanks in advance, +reps for help!

there is a jigsaw attachment for the dremel (for xpr 400 only iirc) I am cutting a window this weekend, and from having already cut cable management openings with cutting disks, I think for a window, especially one without a c-channel you may want to use a jigsaw. If you already have a dremel see if yours can accept the multisaw attachment. if not you may need to buy a separate jigsaw. If you have neither then I can recommend the dremel XPR 400 2.0 amp power corded model. its a beast. I have the xpr 400 6/90 kit, i highly recommend. The dremel multisaw comes with it, as well as the flexishaft attachment. the dremel jig can use regular blades just so you know (18 teeth per inch or more, for metal, if youre cutting a case panel) Use a good file to smooth the cuts, the dremel sanding disks wont stand up to that. I havent bolted so no info there

good luck

I say jigsaw is easier

File and sand the edges to make them as clean as possible.

If your going to use bolts you'll need to drill holes in the acrylic, go slowish (you don't want to melt the acrylic, but going too fast will likely cause the acrylic to crack)

I have the Dremel Lithium-Ion Cordless

Should i get one of these? (although under applications, it says it's for "wood cutting")

Jigsaw whoops the dremels ass when it comes to doing a simple window!

For bolting the acrylic on I use some nice dome or socket head M4x6mm bolts.

Microsis, the mini-saw you linked there is for wood, and the blades are all for wood so I doubt it can be used for case steel or aluminum. the MULTI-saw I am referring to is a jigsaw attachment for Dremel, but I remember its not for just any model of dremel. youll need to look up your exact model and see what attachments are available - if the multi saw is one of them then youre in business cheap. If not youll need a jigsaw, or get some 1.5 inch reinforced cutting disks (even the ez lock kit for your tool) and cut the window with disks.

yes it is easy to cut straight with the jigsaw attachment, and with disks, if you go slow and clean, and move from right to left. The dremel turns clockwise so you want to cut in the direction OPPOSITE to its spin, so you you dont bind the disk, and get spun off your cut line.

I cut my cable management openings with disks and it was no problem in the steel (cosmos 1000). Just go slow.

I guess the reason the guy didn't do the corners with the drill bit is because he is using c-channel stuff and I'm trying not to...

EDIT

How about laser cutting? Any idea how much it would cost to get that done?
