How important is laptop bus?

Thread Starter
I need to buy 2 laptops for 2 very computer illiterate people.

I have it down to 2 choices. One is a Toshiba with 800Mhz System bus.

Another is a compaq with 1600 Mhz system bus.

Normally this would be a simple decision, but I see the Toshiba has an Atheros wifi card in it, and I understand they are superior to intel's offerings. In the long run, if the slower bus of 800 Mhz going to hurt?

in a laptop you wont notice the difference really in the speeds due to the fact of the low harddrives they have in them make them feel like slugs.... but links too these 2 laptops would also help also.

I didn't want to take up too much of your time, but since you asked I would be happy to provide links.

Toshiba

Compaq

Again they appear to have the same CPU (I am hoping they are both the 65nm version of the TL-60). I want to get the Toshiba because it sports AMD and ATI, and I kind of want to support AMD as much as possible right now, so spending an extra $20 to do so doesn't bother me. But it does if it is at the cost of a great amount of performance, or overall product lifespan.

Whitecrane, the Toshiba A215 is a fairly new model so one would think that the TL-60 is the 65nm 31w TDP processor. It's release was May 1st, 2007. The first S1 TL-60 came out in 2006. Don't quote me on that though

In regards to your system bus question all TL-60's are 1600mhz HT (hypertransport)

Good luck with your purchase

For normal use, an atheros chipset wont differ any from an intel. If anything, intels power consumption would be lower. Atheros chipsets are great because they are compatible with linux and can be used with packet injection for wifi pentesting. So unless these laptops are going to pentesters (which they arent since pentesters can make up their own minds), I wouldnt worry. At this point, take the one that has a balance of price and power. The TL-60 as mentioned above is a good choice. My wife has one and its pretty quick for a laptop.
