Lapping Q6600, With Pics *no 56k*

Hi all,

I got home today and decided *built up the courage* to lap my CPU

I started out with some wet and dry 180grit paper just to take of the nickel coating and get the thing sort of flat. As you can see the edges were quit raised on the CPU:

After about 15-20mins it the nickel had gone and it looked like this:

When I recently did my TRUE I used an old piece of tile that looked flat however I didn’t feel like taking any shortcuts with this one so I found an old bit of mirrored glass which worked a treat. Not sure what everyone else used to hold the paper down but a small splash of water under the paper and two rulers seemed to work ok

Next I moved on to 400grit for about another 20-30 mins:

I then moved on to 800 grit for about 20 mins and then finally 1500 grit for about 5 mins, here is the line test nice and flat

I used the 1500 on my TRUE as well so here is a pic of them both

Here comes the money shot!!! !!!

While I had everything out I decided to give the washer mod ago, from what I understand it pushes to cooler onto the CPU more which means you get better contact (Correct me if I am wrong). I used some AS5 to stich the washers to the True (To give the correct thickness of washers I superglued two together )

The CPU back in the board:

The whole job took about 2 and a half hours over all which isn’t that bad,

The temps before lapping anything 45, 40, 39, 42 idle, and 69, 65, 55, 62 load

After lapping TRUE 32, 32, 31, 30 idle and 50, 49, 48, 48 load

After lapping both CPU and TRUE 34, 34, 32, 32 idle and 51, 50, 49, 49 load with CPU overclocked to 3ghz (which makes quite a heat difference on the B3)

Pic of current idle temps:

Looking good. I was thinking about lapping mine this weekend. How was it lapping on wood? Most people lap on glass because it is generally flatter.

I'll lap if for ya

:Edit: I lapped my Pentium D and Celeron D, and my ACF7Pro. Both turned out to be a mirror, as well as the heatsink. Took about an hour and a half, 2 hours.

Glass will Always be flatter than any wood..id never trust wood to be flat enough to lap on..id only ever use glass..heres a pic of my q6600 lapped.

Somewhat... I didn't have any problem putting it on sandpaper

After reading the guide here, it was cake.
