Wait, whut? 7 > 6.1
Windows 2000 = 5.0
XP = 5.1
Vista = 6.0
7 = 6.1

7 will be to Vista as XP was to 2000.

Linux is NOT superior to Windows as a desktop end-user operating system. Yes it may be wonderful for servers and embedded systems as well as mobile devices. It will NEVER be better than Windows or OSX as an end-user OS. Get over it.

You realize windows 7 was announced before vista was announced right?

Quote:
In about 2000 Microsoft started the planning to follow up Windows XP and its server counterpart Windows Server 2003 (both codenamed Whistler) with a major new release of Windows that was codenamed Blackcomb (both codenames refer to the Whistler-Blackcomb resort). This new version was at that time scheduled for a 2005 release.[citation needed]

Major features were planned for Blackcomb, including an emphasis on searching and querying data and an advanced storage system named WinFS to enable such scenarios. In this context, a feature mentioned by Bill Gates for Blackcomb was "a pervasive typing line that will recognize the sentence that [the user is] typing in."[6]

Later Blackcomb was delayed and an interim minor release, codenamed "Longhorn", was announced for a 2003 release.[7] By the middle of 2003, however, Longhorn had acquired some of the features originally intended for Blackcomb, including WinFS, the Desktop Window Manager, and new versions of system components built on the .NET Framework. After the 2003 "Summer of Worms", where three major viruses -- Blaster, Sobig, and Welchia -- exploited flaws in Windows operating systems within a short time period, Microsoft changed their development priorities, putting some of Longhorn's major development work on hold in order to develop new service packs for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 that included a number of new security and safety features. Development of Windows Vista was also "reset" in September 2004 as a result of concerns about the quality of code that was being introduced to the operating system. The eventual result of this was that WinFS, the Next Generation Secure Computing Base, and other features seen in Longhorn builds were deemed "not ready" for wide release, and as such did not appear in Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

As major feature work on Windows Vista wound down in early 2006, Blackcomb was renamed Vienna.[8] However, following the release of Windows Vista, it was confirmed by Microsoft on July 20, 2007 that "the internal name for the next version of the Windows Client OS"[2] is Windows 7, a name that had been reported by some sources months before.[8]

www.ubuntu.com

If you've got a 3 year-old PC, it'll install and be running in 15-20 minutes.

Graphic drivers can then be installed with a couple clicks using Envy.

"Every person on earth..." Of course not. Even windows isn't fully functional upon install (which can take between 15 and 25 min as well). Then you gotta get drivers for all the hardware and install em...

30 min fully functional OS isn't very realistic.

It can be superior, depending on the application of the software (how you apply it). If you're doing basic desktop work and not requiring the use of known unsupported commercial software, then Linux is a great choice for the home desktop.

What can XP do that 2000 can't?
What can ME do that 98 can't?
[there is something but can you name it ?]
and is it worth the change?

I'm sick of telling all the (little but much of them) improvements that make Vista better than XP, over and over again.

And the story of your friend is a joke.
No OS is making the HD read go down to 6 MB/s - there is another reason to it.
My (close to 2 years old Notebook) boots faster and feels way smother with Vista than with XP...

Besides the fact that XP comes with this ugly gaudy candy look...
XP can game, that's pretty important to me. 2000 is bulletproof though, it did everything I needed to do besides game and on top of that I've only ever seen it crash once.

ME can't do ****, everyone knows that. Why are you asking this?

The HDD transfer speeds are no joke. Ask mongo988, he's the one I saw the problem with. After patching to SP1 (and making no other changes) his disk-to-disk transfer speeds went up to ~25MB/s.

This isn't the stupidest argument, far from it. It's the most important argument that can be made against Vista. If there is no freaking reason to upgrade to it, why the hell should you? It isn't revolutionary, it does not offer a significant advantage over XP, certainly not enough to justify its $300 price tag. It's a lot of money, and can certainly be spent on better things than a mediocre operating system.

I already changed my GUI to mimic Vista almost perfectly, that's the only "improvement" I could see.

(Yeah I just necro'd a thread, sorry)
