theres certain software made for linux distros specifically, so yes it does "support"...is it compatible with vista or xp? no, unless you use wine or some alternative (which will cause incompatibilities in some programs) to try and get windows programs to work on linux..i cant really answer your question about the advantages, this becomes opinionated , give it a try with vmware or a live disk first

What exactly do you mean by "support programs like Vista or XP?"

Most of the advantages of running Linux are a faster overall system (try running SuperPi on both Linux and Windows and see which is faster), super customizability, better security, package management, and a LOT of good free programs.

The only real disadvantages are the lack of games in Linux and the lack of support for commercial software.
EDIT: And of course, the fact that you may have to learn and use the command line, but only a Windows user would think of that as a disadvtange .
The only company that really makes native games for Linux is id software.
There are a few pretty good free Linux games (Nexuiz, Warsow), but not that many.

With wine you can use Windows programs on Linux, but that not only sorta defeats the purpose, but games don't run nearly as good as they do on Windows. Most everything you use in Windows has an equal or (usually) better replacement.
In both CS:S and Oblivion I get less than optimal framerates, even with settings turned down (and my system might be outdated but it's not so outdated to where these games should be barely playable).

Just keep this in mind: Linux is not windows

If you just want to run windows programs you're better off using windows. The folks at wine have made some amazing strides in allowing programs developed for windows to run on linux, but linux will obviously not support windows programs as well as windows will.

For media/movies/dvd's there are many fantastic open source programs that you can use to do everything you can on windows and then some.

You can play COD4 through Wine, and most other games, but you will notice a decrease in FPS and may have to mess with some stuff.

Yes you can play pretty much any format of media including DVDs.

Linux is great for just surfing the internet, and word processing.

My Suggestion is to try Linux before you attempt making the complete switch. Its not for everyone and requires alot of tinkering. Try the latest Ubuntu release.
