SLI- to wait or go for it?

Thread Starter
Ok heres the deal. I am thinking about going SLI with a 8800GT AKIMBO but dont know if I should wait for a new 9800 series GT to show up in June/July? I dont have a whole ton of money so I could only do one or the other...

Should I wait for the new cards or buy it now? ( I know i cant mix and 8800 and a 9800, i would get rid of the 8800 by putting it into another machine)

Do whatever is more efficient for you. If it was me, I would wait for the 9800GT to become poular, bringing down the 8800 price, then I would buy another 8800. It will be cheaper and I can't think of a game you couldn't play with two 8800's.

8800GT is pretty cheap now, I say go for it as I did a month ago and it rocks. I got two evga stock clock cards for $159 ea. after MIR.

It isn't about 8800GT being cheap. Focus guys. It is all about how long your investment will last. You probably should buy a single high end card for now. Enjoys it until it begins to show its age (until most games begin to out paced your single card), then the second card (for SLI) should have a sizable price reduction by that time. Hopefully the reduction of the price of the second card will match the SLI performance gain.

Actually, that depends on timeframe. If you don't SLI within 6 months, odds are you are better off selling your old card for a newer faster single card.

Id say go for the SLI.... Sure a card may come in the future that is "better" but that will always be the case....

do sli'd gt's now, when you find that they are no longer cutting it in games, then upgrade... its the cheapest way too

The only game out there right now that needs this kind of power is crysis, and I play @ 1600x1200 settings H/VH and get between 25-45FPS..
Every other game is completely maxed out and I dont ever see less than 60FPS...

Wait. For God's sake, wait! The new lines from ATI and Nvidia are about to drop, yet everyday I see threads like "Should I buy this vid card?"

In a month, make a decision between nvidia GTX2xx and ATI 4xxx.

Just some more food for thought..

Personally, I went SLI now with the 8800GT's and I will upgrade after the new line is out for a while and the prices level out so I have some time to consider what I want..

Im thinking of getting the lower end G2xx and going SLI if the price is right...

I like the idea of a step-up I didnt think about that at all. Maybe i'll do that tomorrow considering EVGA is gonna have a huge sale (They say...) So, I think thats a good idea. If they come out with a 9800 card thats really nice, i can step up! Thanks for the idea.

Hows the performance increase with 2x GT's vs 1x GT?

As it turns out... the 9800 cards are virtually the same as 8800 cards so not worth upgrading. SLI yeilds anywhwere between 0-80% performance gain. It depends on your application, resolution, and drivers.
