Searching for games on CS:S crashes my modem!

I didn't really see any sort of "network" section or anything, so this seemed to be the best place. Sorry if it's wrong.

Basically what the title says. When I go to "search for games" in counter strike, it gets up to about 2.8k servers and it starts getting spotty (ie the number of servers found goes up in short bursts) and eventually I become unable to communicate with my modem. My modem has also crashed every couple days since about the time i hooked up my new computer, but the counterstrike thing is the only way that i can reliably duplicate the problem.

Things like speed tests or multiple downloads that max out my connection don't give me this problem.

I took my router out of the loop to eliminate that as a possible source for the problem, but it didn't help. When the crash occurs, my router becomes unable to access the modem, and I no longer have acess to the modem GUI.

I tried adding a seperate Ethernet card to my computer (really hard to fit in there!) just to check if my onboard controller is the problem, but no luck. I also plugged an old phone into my DSL line to check for excessive line noise, but you can only hear noise if you listen REALLY closely.

My modem firmware is the most recent version (although that version is apparently like 3 years old )

The one thing that I should probably try is installing CS:S on another computer to ensure that the problem isn't my computer. Unfortunately I don't have another computer that's really fast enough, so I'll have to give a friend a call or something.

The only thing that I can think of is to call SBC (or whoever the heck owns them these days) and ask 'em to give me a new modem. Or shell out for a new one myself, i suppose.

Anybody who has any Ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,
Mark

Check your event viewer and see if you are getting the following error <<EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts>>

I was kind of thinking that it might have something to do with trying to connect to a lot of IPs in a short period of time. I'll check that when I get home (I'm sort of half-paying attention to my data structures class right now)

If that's the case, what would you reccomend?

Well XP limits the amount of open tcp/ip connections you can have and if you are getting the eventid 4226 error it means that you have too many connections open at one time. This can be fix with a patch found over at http://lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads also you might want to go over to http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweaks and run a tweak test. From there on just follow the instructions that it tells you on how to tweak your connection.
