[ExtremeTech] AMD GAME! Won't Work - Page 5

This has absolutely nothing to do with any software. It's a marketing ploy basically. AMD will slap the gamer tag on machines that have the HARDWARE to play games. Prolly won't make much of a difference in AMD's bottom line, but all in all not a bad idea in my opinion.

Will you guys stop the bickering?

Stop the fanboy comments, saying "AMD sucks" 800 times doesnt get you a better place in heaven. Grow up.

/On topic:
While its not going to "save" PC gaming, it will get people what they want. If their budget is $500, they want to play HL2 at a decent frame rate, and arent a fanboy. Would you recommend them an Intel/IGP computer because it has a messiah2duo or would you tell them to get an "AMD Game" computer that wouldnt self-combust after clicking an 3D game.

Most people have kids who want to play games occasionally, and while an intel IGP is "capable" of running them, an HD3400+ would utterly destroy the game compared.

So regardless of us who know what were talking about, most people have no clue about their computer besides what the sales man tells them.. this will be a step in the right direction if implemented right, and i dont see anyone else stepping up to the plate.

One of the many reasons this won't work is because the systems change, so unless the ratings are constantly updated in stores as well, there is no guarantee for the consumer still. The chance is better, but it's no promise. And their definitions of "Ultra" and things like that are not top-of-the-line to begin with.

Just picture for a minute you are computer illiterate, You go to Wal-mart or W/E with the intent of buying a pc to play game x but have absolutely no clue about what to buy, When out of the corner of your eye you spot AMD'S new super duper all singing all dancing guaranteed to play game x package with all these performance suggestive words such as 'ultra' then you are going be sold right there and then.

It's a blatantly cynical marketing ploy that will probably do little for the noobs and matter to us about as much as Dell's XPS's do but you cant really blame them for trying something new given their current financial situation

well to solve that, start putting year on the PC like they do with car manufactures,(I.E. 1973 Firebird Trans Am) lol maybe create some value to pc itself instead of 400 dollar hardware become 50 bucks in one year (just joking but yeah)

EDIT2: lol, imagining "2008 AMD Game Ultra" or "2009 RadeonX" lol

The way I see it is that AMD will be able to slap a "gamer ready" sticker on a pc that at least has a discrete GPU or a 780G chipset GPU with a decent processor/ram combo and wind up getting a few more bucks out of that PC. A nice secondary benefit would be the general public beginning to associate AMD hardwarwe with gaming hardware. We all know Intels will beat the AMD's in performance, but most consumers don't know crap about pc's. It's not like AMD has to spend a lot of money on this venture so I think it's a good move for AMD in general even if it there are higher performing options available with Intel/nVidia.

The problem with that being that when I bought the cpu, mobo, and DDR in my sig rig, the combo was already nine months old. It's now two years old and I still play most games maxed out(low AA) at 1080p because my graphics card is good enough to do that. My system comes in pretty low on their flowchart.

That's why this thing will not turn out that useful - it assumes that people buying PC's don't know anything about them.

I like the Windows Experience Index idea a lot better

When Microsoft puts out a significant upgrade, more people will be able to make use of it...

I think that this article really contradicts itself. First of all, the author freaks out because someone is apparently trying to 'save' PC gaming, while it doesn't need saving. While it may be true that it doesn't really need to be 'saved', that isn't really the point of the AMD Game! program. What they're trying to do is just make it easier for people to tell the difference between a machine that has integrated graphics and one that can actually play a game.

But then, he goes on to bash the program because it doesn't stop OEM's from using integrated graphics to begin with? Well, I have news form him because no matter what anyone does OEM's will not stop using integrated graphics in the near future. Not everyone needs gaming-grade graphics, and it's expensive to include them. If the OEM's want to compete on price that leaves them left with the cheap IGP solutions. The only way to combat people trying to game on IGP's is customer education, which the Game! initiative is addressing. I can't even figure out why piracy was even brought up. No crap slapping a label on a computer won't stop piracy.

The other thing it's bashed for is for ignoring Intel/Nvidia. Sorry, I forgot it isn't possible to have an enjoyable gaming experience with a Phenom+Radeon. Sure Nvidia/Intel are dominating the high-end, but it's not like the Radeon HD's aren't competitive in the market this program is aimed at. Besides that, AMD's Brent Barry stated in an interview with Shacknews that one of the goals of the program was to encourage other manufacturers and the PC Gaming Alliance to come up with a similar type of solution:

Quote:
One of our goals is we want the rest of the industry to bring out these kinds of programs. We don't need any kind of exclusive right to this kind of marketing.

Source
I'm not trying to say that AMD Game! is THE answer to the marketing of gaming systems, but this article seems to do little more than bash AMD for coming up with this before Intel/Nvidia managed to agree a similar system.
